Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee is a hybrid whose parents are Cattleya Mini Purple (Cattleya pumila x Cattleya walkeriana) and Cattleya intermedia. It is an epiphyte with the pseudobulbs which are predominantly single-leaved, spindle-shaped, ranging in size from 6 to 12 cm long and 1-2 cm wide. The leaves are light green, lanceolate, ranging in size from 6 to 13 cm long and from 2.5 to 3.5 cm wide. Covers are very small, like scales, so they are not always visually visible. Peduncles are straight, short, develop in parallel with the development of a new sprout, and come to flowering long before the formation of a new pseudobulb and carry 1-2 flowers in themselves (less often 3 or more).

Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee care and culture

Laeliocattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee can bloom at any time of the year, and most often several times a year. Flowers of various colors from white to almost radially symmetrical (peloric) with a predominance of ink tones, measuring about 8-10 cm in diameter. The sepals are lanceolate, and the petals are oval or ovoid. The lip is triple, split at the tip, can partially or completely harbor a column. Column in the form of a spout, very thick, about 2.5 cm long.

The most common clones of this hybrid are:

  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee '14' (Cattleya Mini Purple 'Blue Sky' x Cattleya intemedia f. aquinii '2' with the lip and tips of the petals are crimson, the main color of the flower is pink, the column is of a dark crimson color).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee '84' (Cattleya Mini Purple 'Blue Sky' x Cattleya intemedia f. aquinii '2' with the lip and tips of the petals are crimson, the main color of the flower is pink, the column is of a dark crimson color, the lip is not closed).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee '247' (the lip and tips of the petals are very pale lilac-gray).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee '278' (lip and tips of petals of inks and crimson color).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee '288' (a flower rather white, only a lip painted in a gray-purple color).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Angel Kiss' (Cattleya Mini Purple 'Blue Sky' x Cattleya intermedia f. aquinii-coerulea with lilac-gray flowers with darker petals and lip tips).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Beauty' (Cattleya Mini Purple 'Blue Sky' x Cattleya intemedia f. aquinii-coerulea 'Doda', differs in the size of the flower and the pseudobulbs themselves, as well as in the amount of darker purple on the petals and lip, often the lip does not completely cover the inside of the column).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Blue Fantasy' (flowers are bluish-gray, the lip is darker, there are no darkings on the tips of the petals).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Blue Lake' (flowers of a darker, rather purple color); Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'G. No.1 ' (a very rich dark purple version).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'K-293' (color of the lips and the tips of the petals are crimson).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Nono' (the color is very dark, the petals are almost completely painted, often in the form of frequent veins).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Ocean View' (flowers are also darker and more saturated).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Omar' (Cattleya Mini Purple 'Blue Sky' x Cattleya intermedia var. coerulea with flowers are bluish, only lip is brightly colored).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'O'Whimsy' (crimson lip, the general color of the flower is pinkish, not blue).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Royal Flash' (lip color and petal tips of a more ink shade, often a mixture of raspberry and ink; the same column may not be completely covered by the lip).
  • Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee 'Splash' (the color of the petals and lips are closest to the blue, the column also has a darker purple-blue shade).

CATTLEYA CARIADS MINI-QUINEE ORCHID PLANT CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee loves bright sunlight and is able to tolerate direct sunlight (50000-70000 lux), acquiring a lighter shade of leaves and pseudobulbs. Bright sunlight is one of the main prerequisites for flowering orchids of this hybrid, and if lighting is insufficient (especially during the development of new shoots), then the blossom will simply not bloom, as new pseudobulbs grow underdeveloped, i.e. incapable of flowering. During the whole year, the duration of the light day should be at least 10 hours, ideally 16 hours.

It must be remembered that the natural habitat of its parents is distinguished by the fact that there is always enough sunlight for active growth, it is slowed down only due to the seasonal lack of moisture during the drought period, but not because of poor lighting. The intensity of sunlight there is increased very much, then slightly reduced, but even in its lowest state, it is still sufficient for minimal growth. The first sign of sustainable light is the presence of active growing root tips. This is especially important in the autumn-winter period, since it is at the time that there is a very serious decrease in the intensity of illumination.

Temperature:

Laeliocattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee refers to a moderately warm temperature regime, and throughout the year the plants are kept under the following conditions: Summer temperature at 25-35 ° C day and about 18-20 ° C at night; Winter temperature is not below 16 ° C. For the successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always 6-10 ° C lower than the daytime temperature.

Humidity:

In the native climate of the closest natural relatives of this hybrid (Brazil), the humidity of the air almost never drops below 70%, most often at around 80%. In conditions of high humidity, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the room where the plants are kept, since wet, stale air is an ideal medium for the mass reproduction of various fungal and bacterial diseases.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee is usually grow in pots and hanging lattice baskets, and placed on blocks. The substrate must be very well breathable, therefore the mixture of the bark of coniferous trees with charcoal and sphagnum moss (20-25%) is best in its quality. When growing orchids on blocks to prevent rapid drying of the root system of the plant, it is recommended to make a small interlayer of moss between it and the block. Above the roots, you can also put live or dry sphagnum.

Repotting is desirable only when it is really necessary, for example, in cases of severe salinization or condensation of the substrate, at its critically high or low pH (a rate of 5.5 to 6.5) or , when the plant will grow very much and the pot will become too small for it (pseudobulbs will begin to hang from the edges of the pot). The best time for transplant is the time when new orchid sprouts reach a size of 5 cm and begin to build up their own roots.

Watering:

Watering this species directly depends on the overall temperature of the content, the higher it is, the more often and abundant it is necessary to water. Plants growing on blocks, it is desirable to water daily in the morning, so that by evening their roots could dry out relatively well. When watering orchids in pots, it is necessary to remember that excess water during watering should flow freely out of the pot, as the stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pallet can very quickly lead to rotting of the roots and the lower part of the plant. The substrate between waterings should dry well.

An important factor in the care is the quality of water (water conductivity of 100 to 200 µS (maximum 600 µS), acidity 5-6 pH, and hardness not higher than 12 ° dH). Water for irrigation is desirably to use soft, filtered or a mixture of ordinary tap and distilled water in a 1: 1 ratio. When using tap water, remember that it is better in quality in a hot tap, as it contains less impurities, so as not to scale the pipes, respectively, and its pH is not very high.

Fertilizer:

During the new growth period, this type of orchid is fertilized every 2 weeks in 1/2 of the fertilizer concentration indicated on the package. In addition to the usual root top dressing, it is also recommended to produce a foliar dressing, when a very much diluted fertilizer is sprayed on the outer part of the plant. It is best to feed the orchid, alternating both these methods. The best fertilizer is fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in equal parts, for example, NPK = 3-3-3 or 8-8-8. If you do not have such a fertilizer, then at the beginning of the growing season (the emergence of new shoots), feed the orchid with a fertilizer with a high nitrogen content, and when the sprout reaches 1/2 of its normal growth - fertilizer with a higher content of phosphorus.

Rest period:

Cattleya Cariad's Mini-Quinee does not need any period of rest, the development of flower buds begins about 2/3 of the full development of a new young sprout, which at the end of flowering within a month turns into a young pseudobulb, and the process continues on a new one. The flowers only need good sun and regular night-time temperatures down to at least 20-22 ° C, and nothing more - no frosts and no long-term drying.
