Angraecum leonis also called as Leon's Angraecum, Aeranthes leonis, Aeranthus leonis, Angraecum humblotii, Angraecum leonii, Macroplectrum humblotii, Macroplectrum leonis, Mystacidium leonis, is a species of the genus Angraecum. This species was described by Éduard-François André in 1885.

IDENTIFY ANGRAECUM LEONIS

Angraecum leonis exists in two varieties found in completely different areas. A smaller variation, rising at the level of the sea, meet in the north of Madagascar. The second, larger variety is found in the Comoros (islands between Madagascar and Africa), where it grows at an altitude of approx. 910 meters.

Angraecum leonis care and culture

It is a medium sized, hot to cool growing fan-shaped epiphyte, which reaching 15-20 cm in height with a short, stout stem carrying 4 to 5, distichous, narrowly ensiform, spreading, falcate, flattened, fleshy-coriaceous, 10-15 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide leaves.

Leon's Angraecum blooms in the winter on 1 to 2, axillary, erect or suberect, stout, bracteate, shorter inflorescence arising from the second or third leaf base, with 1 to 7, fragrant, long-lasting flowers. The fragrant flowers are durable, with a pure white color, 3-4 cm wide and 4-5 cm high.

ANGRAECUM LEONIS CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Angraecum leonis needs a light level of 25000-40000 lux. The plants are able to tolerate up to 50% of sunlight if they are gradually accustomed to it. Nevertheless, they bloom at a wide range of light levels and strong sunlight is neither necessary nor recommended.

Temperature:

 It is a thermophilic plant. In summer, when the average temperature is 31-32 ° C , night 24 ° C , giving a daily difference of 7-8 ° C . The average temperature of the winter to 29 ° C , nighttime 21-22 ° C , a difference of daily 8 ° C .

Humidity:

Leon's Angraecum needs the humidity of 75-85% from summer to autumn, decreases to almost 65% during winter and spring.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Angraecum leonis can be attached to cork sheets or tree ferns, with high humidity and watering at least once a day during the summer. If the plants grow in pots, it is recommended to use a very loose, permeable substrate, such as pieces of pine bark or medium to high gradation cork clusters. These plants grow well in coconut fibers. Pots of understated size should be used, only for maintaining the roots, and repotting should take place when the growth of new roots begins or, if possible, immediately after flowering.

Watering:

From summer to early autumn rainfall is moderate to heavy. The cultivated plants should be watered so abundantly that the foliage is swollen and firm. When the leaves dry up or wrinkle in summer, the plant should be watered more often, or moved to a place where it can be fogged more often. After a wet summer almost immediately a very dry period lasts from late autumn to spring, when it is so dry that there is no dew.

Fertilizer:

During the period of strong growth, the plants should be fertilized every week with 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. You can use fertilizer with low nitrogen content and high phosphorus content in autumn. It improves flowering in the next season and strengthens new growth before winter.

Every few weeks, the substrate should be flushed to avoid the formation of mineral deposits, especially when high doses of fertilizers are used, it is necessary to normally water the plants to dissolve the accumulated salts. Rinsing throughout the whole year is important especially where the water is highly mineralized.

Rest period:

In the 6-month winter period, watering for Angraecum leonis should be significantly reduced. Usually an occasional morning fogging is enough, especially if sunny weather is expected. The amount of water must be increased when the leaves begin to wrinkle. However, care should be taken not to pour the plants in the pots, because the signs of root rot due to excess water are the same as in the case of deficiency.
