Paphiopedilum exul also called as The Excluded Paphiopedilum, Cordula exul, Cypripedium exul, Cypripedium exul var. aureum, Cypripedium insigne var. exul, Paphiopedilum exul f. aureum, Paphiopedilum exul var. aureum, is a species of the genus Paphiopedilum. This species was described by Robert Allen Rolfe in 1894.

It is a small to medium sized, hot growing, terrestrial species with 4 to 5, linear, suberect, clear green, fleshy, glossy, 15-30 cm long leaves.

The Excluded Paphiopedilum flowers in the fall through late spring on a slender, pubescent, 30 cm long, single flowered inflorescence with a long, narrowly elliptic to elliptic floral bract. The greenish yellow flowers are up to 7.5 cm in diameter.

PAPHIOPEDILUM EXUL CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Paphiopedilum exul needs a light level of 20000-38000 lux. The direct morning sun is very important. The ideal photoperiod is 12 hours.

Temperature:

It is a warm thermal requirements species. The ideal temperatures are 26-27 ° C during the day and 19-21 ° C at night all year round.

Humidity:

The Excluded Paphiopedilum needs the average humidity of 60-70%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Paphiopedilum exul is semi-terrestrial, therefore its cultivation takes place only in pots. As a substrate, the mixture of medium-small bark (1.5-2.5 cm) and perlite in the proportion 2: 1 is added. In addition, flakes of shells are added, because this species prefers the more calcareous substrates of most orchids, in fact in its case the ideal pH of the substrate would be 7.0-7.6.

Since the roots of this species do not absolutely tolerate the accumulation of mineral salts in the substrate, the repotting must be frequent: the young plants are decanted each year, while the adult specimens every 2 years.

Watering:

In the period from March to November this species is frequently water, as soon as the substratum has dried very well but before it becomes completely dry.

Fertilizer:

It is fertilized once a month with 1/4 of the dose indicated on the bottle of a suitable liquid fertilizer for orchids. Before fertilizing the plant it is necessary to water it to avoid the harmful contact of the fertilizer on the dry roots.

Rest period:

The blooms are stimulated by adequate lighting and daily temperature changes between day and night (which must be at least 5 ° C). In winter the water is reduced, and the orchid must remain dry for 2-3 days between waterings. However, it is important to keep the air humidity high during this period. In this period the fertilizations are suspended.
