Oncidium endocharis also called as The Graceful Oncidium, Concocidium endocharis, Oncidium johannis, is a species of the genus Oncidium. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1884.

IDENTIFY ONCIDIUM ENDOCHARIS

Oncidium endocharis is found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica. It grows epiphytic in forests on trees and rocks at an altitude of 1700 to 2200 meters above sea level.

Oncidium endocharis care and culture

It is a medium sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte or lithophyte with rather small, ovate, laterally compressed, ancipitous with 3 small ribs on each side, slightly sprinkled red-brown pseudobulbs partially enveloped basally by thin, dry, papery sheaths and carrying a single, apical, leathery, strap-shaped to linear-elliptic, rounded apically, narrowing below into a conduplicate base, 3.5 cm in length and 2.5 cm in width leaf.

The Graceful Oncidium blooms in the winter and early spring on a basal erect to arching, 17.5 to 36 cm long, laxly 10 to 12 flowered, racemose inflorescence arising on a newly matured pseudobulb and having small, triangular to ovate, acute, concave, thin, dry floral bracts and 4 to 10 somewhat cupped flowers. The flowers are yellowish-brown, not fully opened, odorless, about 2 cm in diameter. Tepals narrowed, elliptical, with pointed tips, rather strongly bent forward, measuring 0.8-1 cm in length and 0.3 cm in width. Lip is triple, the total size is about 1.5 cm in length, its upper parts are marble, 0.8 cm long and 0.4-0.5 cm wide, grow parallel to the column, the anterior part is yellow, elongated, at the tip is cut into parts. At the base of the lip there are 4 symmetrical yellow outgrowths, something similar to the denticles, about 0.1-0.2 cm in size, two of them look forward, and two on the sides. The column is about 0.5 cm long.

ONCIDIUM ENDOCHARIS CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Oncidium endocharis is grow in bright scattered light. The ideal location is considered to be the south-eastern orientation, but if there are not any, then you can use western, eastern or very bright northern windows. This species does not like too dark place (here the orchid simply will not blossom), and too light (leaves can burn). If the western or southern windows were chosen for the location of the plant, then during the period from May to early September, the orchid should be protected from the influence of too bright day and evening sun - put behind a curtain (for example, on a table near a window) or into the shade of other plants. The most rational combination of windows - in winter, contain an orchid on the southern or western windows, and in the summer on the eastern or northern.

Temperature:

This type of orchid refers to a moderate temperature regime, and throughout the year the orchids are grown under the following conditions: Day temperature at 20-25 ° C; Night temperature not below 15 ° C. To successfully cultivate at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always 4 ° C lower than the daytime temperature.

Humidity:

The Graceful Oncidium needs relatively high humidity, not less than 60%, ideally in the morning 100%, and in the daytime and in the evening 60-70%. Too dry air adversely affects the development of the plant and its growth is inhibited, and the leaves turn yellow and dry out.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Oncidium endocharis can be grow in conventional plastic or clay pots or placed on blocks. As a substrate, it is recommended to use a mixture of bark of coniferous trees with charcoal, peat (20%) and moss sphagnum. When growing orchids on blocks to prevent rapid drying of the root system of the plant, it is recommended to make a small layer of moss between it and the block. Above the roots, you can also put live or dry sphagnum.

Watering:

Watering this kind of orchids directly depends on the total temperature of the content, the higher it is, the more often and abundant it will be necessary to water. Plants growing on the blocks are poured daily in the morning, so that by evening the roots of the orchids could dry out relatively well. The substrate between waterings should dry well.

Fertilizer:

During the period of new growth (from April to September), this kind of orchids is fertilized every 2-3 weeks in 1/2 or 1/3 of the concentration of fertilizer indicated on the package. In addition to the usual root top dressing, it is also recommended to produce a foliar dressing, when a very much diluted fertilizer is sprayed on the outer part of the plant. It is best to feed the orchid, alternating both these methods. At the beginning of the growing season (the appearance of new shoots) it is recommended to use fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content, and when the new sprout reaches 1/2 of its normal size - a fertilizer with a high content of phosphorus.

Rest period:

To stimulate flowering, Oncidium endocharis needs a clearly defined rest period. Since September, the orchid feeding is stopped, and the overall temperature of the content and watering of the plant is gradually decreasing. As soon as new orchid sprouts mature, i.e. will turn into pseudobulbs (rounded), the total temperature of the content should be set at 18 ° C in the daytime and 12-14 ° C at night, and the watering stops completely. For the rest period, the orchid should be kept at the brightest possible place. With the appearance of peduncles, the rest period ends: the total temperature of the content gradually increases, and the watering of the orchid resumes in the usual volume (to begin, preferably with a light spray).

The refusal of the flowering of the orchid can be caused by the too hot content of the plant (especially when the new sprout reaches 1/2 of its usual size), the lack of sufficient differences between night and day temperatures, poor lighting, or non-observance of the rest period.
