Encyclia polybulbon also called as The Many Bulbed Encyclia, Bulbophyllum occidentale, Dinema cubincola, Dinema polybulbon, Epidendrum cubincola, Epidendrum polybulbon, Epidendrum polybulbon var. luteo-album, is a species of the genus Encyclia. This species was described by Dressler in 1961.
IDENTIFY ENCYCLIA POLYBULBON
Encyclia polybulbon is native to the Caribbean from Cuba to Jamaica, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. In Mexico, these plants are found in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz, they usually growing in oak forests or in mixed forests, at heights of 600-2000 m. Although they are usually epiphytes, sometimes they grow on rocks.
It is a mini-miniature sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte or lithophyte, which reaching a height of up to 6.5 cm, with ovoid to narrowly ovoid, laterally compressed, yellow-green, 2.5 cm long pseudobulbs carrying 1 to 3, towards the apex, elliptic-lanceolate to elliptic-ovate, retuse, 1.2-7.5 cm long leaves.
The Many Bulbed Encyclia blooms from fall to early spring on a single flowered, apical, 1/2" to 1 1/5" (1.25 to 3 cm) long inflorescence subtended by a slender spathe and arising from the apice of the mature pseudobulb and carrying a large fragrant flower. The flowers are up to 3 cm in diameter and are durable. The long, narrow flakes of both whorls may be greenish-yellow, dirty yellow or brownish and are often covered with brown streaks or have red-brown stripes in the lower half. Cream-white to the yellowish-white lip is relatively wide and flat and has a rounded, wavy edge.
ENCYCLIA POLYBULBON CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Encyclia polybulbon needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux.
Temperature:
It is a plant with moderate thermal requirements. In summer the average day temperature is 24 ° C, the average night 15-16 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 8-9 ° C. The average winter temperature is 22-24 ° C during the day and 11-12 ° C at night, giving a diurnal difference of 11-12 ° C.
Humidity:
The Many Bulbed Encyclia needs the humidity of 75-80% in summer and autumn, and falling to 65-70% in winter and spring.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Encyclia polybulbon is easier to grow attached to pieces of cork or uneven bark. In the case of plants mounted on rootstocks, high humidity should be ensured, and in the summer, the plants should be watered at least once a day.
If the plants are grow in pots, it is recommended to use a very loose, permeable substrate, such as pieces of pine bark or medium gradation cork. Pots of understated size should be used, only for maintaining the roots, and repotting should take place when the growth of new roots begins or, if possible, immediately after flowering.
Watering:
During active growth, from summer and early spring, the substrate of the cultivated plants should be wet, but in autumn watering should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
During the period of active growth, Encyclia polybulbon should be fertilized every week with 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of balanced fertilizer for orchids. You can use fertilizer with low nitrogen content in the autumn, and then high content of phosphorus. It improves flowering in the next season and strengthens new growth before winter. Every few weeks, the substrate should be rinsed to avoid the formation of mineral deposits, especially when using high doses of fertilizers.
Rest period:
In the winter during the 4 months period, watering should be reduced, but not eliminated. These conditions can be masked by occasional morning fogging combined with rare watering (every 2-3 weeks) in the period of bright, sunny weather.
