Epidendrum peperomia also called as The Peperomia-Like Epidendrum, Epidendrum gnomus, Epidendrum matthewsii, Epidendrum porpax, Nanodes gnomus, Nanodes matthewsii, Neolehmannia mathewsii, Neolehmannia peperomia, is a species of the genus Epidendrum. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1854.
IDENTIFY EPIDENDRUM PEPEROMIA
Epidendrum peperomia is found in Colombia and Venezuela. Its natural habitat is the woods of pines and oaks, where it grows on trees at an altitude of 600-2700 meters.
It is a dwarf, epiphytic, warm to cold growing, reed stem herb which forms large mats of clustered leafy, 8 cm long stems carrying coriaceous-fleshy, distichous, oblong, obtuse or emarginated leaves.
The Peperomia-Like Epidendrum can bloom at any time with large, one to a few flowers on a terminal inflorescence emerging from between the apical leaves and subtended by bracts. The flowers are 2.5-3 cm in diameter.
EPIDENDRUM PEPEROMIA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Epidendrum peperomia needs a light level of 30000-35000 (up to 40000) lux. If the light is less strong, problems with the blooms may appear. The photoperiod must be 12 hours, even in winter.
Temperature:
The ideal summer temperatures are 24-25 (maximum 26) ° C during the day and 18-19 ° C at night, the winter ones 22-24 ° C during the day and 14-16 ° C at night.
Humidity:
This species loves high humidity, especially if it is grown bare-root: in this case it must be at least 75%, ideal 80-85%. If the plant is potted, 65-70% can be good.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Epidendrum peperomia can be mounted on a raft or grown in a pot, with medium / medium-large pine bark as a substrate. The roots of this species require aeration more than other species, so the addition of sphagnum to the substrate is not recommended. If instead the orchid is placed on a raft, it is important to put a thin layer of sphagnum under the roots to ensure a reserve of moisture.
Watering:
During the growing period (March to November) the watering must be frequent, as soon as the substrate has dried well but before it has become completely dry.
Fertilizer:
From March to November the plant is fertilized every 3 watering with 1/3 the dose indicated on the bottle of a special liquid fertilizer for orchids. Before fertilizing the plant, it is important to water it to avoid the harmful effect of the fertilizer on the dry roots. In winter, add 1/8-1/10 of the water-based dose of sprays 1-2 times a month.
Rest period:
In December-February the watering is replaced with the daily vaporizations of the stems and the upper part of the substratum, which take place in the morning, to allow the plant to dry before evening.
