Epidendrum centropetalum also called as The Spur-Like Gland Epidendrum, Epidendrum centradenia, Epidendrum leprosum, Epidendrum tenuiflorum, Oerstedella centradenia, Oerstedella centropetala, Oerstedella tenuiflora, is a species of the genus Epidendrum. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1852.
IDENTIFY EPIDENDRUM CENTROPETALUM
Epidendrum centropetalum is native to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Most often, these plants grow epiphytically in mountain forests, on the slopes directed towards the Pacific, at heights of 1000-1400 m.
It is a small to medium sized, cool growing orchid, which reaching 30-61 cm in height, with delicate stems that can produce plantlets all along up and down with linear-lanceolate, shiny, 2-9 cm long leaves.
The Spur-Like Gland Epidendrum will bloom on a terminal, few to many flowered inflorescence occurring in the late winter, spring and early summer. The flowers are 1.5-2.0 cm in diameter, and the petals of both whorls are almost the same size and shape. The large, evenly distributed lip is strongly indented, has the same color as the petals, but the white spots at the base create an attractive contrast.
EPIDENDRUM CENTROPETALUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Epidendrum centropetalum needs a light level of 25000-35000 lux. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.
Temperature:
It is a plant with moderate thermal requirements. Throughout the year, the temperature conditions change slightly. The average day temperature is 22-25 ° C, the night 13-15 ° C, and the daily amplitude 9-11 ° C.
Humidity:
The Spur-Like Gland Epidendrum needs the humidity of 80-85% in summer and early autumn, in winter it can fall to almost 70%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Epidendrum centropetalum grow well attached to twigs, cork or bark, as long as we can provide high humidity, but in the summer it requires watering at least once a day. If the plants are grown in pots, the substrate must be very loose and quickly drain away excess water. Regardless of the substrate used, it must allow free access to the roots. You can repot after observing the growth of new roots.
Watering:
In the period from late spring to autumn rainfall is abundant. In contrast, in winter and early spring conditions are a bit more dry. The cultivated plants should often be watered during full growth, but the roots must always dry quickly after watering. At the end of the growing period, in late autumn, the amount of water supplied should be reduced.
Fertilizer:
The plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a fertilizer richer in phosphorus should be used in late summer and autumn.
Rest period:
In winter, watering of Epidendrum centropetalum should be somewhat limited, but must not be allowed to stay dry for a long time. Fertilization should be limited until spring, when stronger watering resumes.
