Trichoglottis amesiana care and culture

It is a medium to large sized, pendulous, warm to cool growing, monopodial epiphyte, which reaching a height of about 70 cm, with pendulous, elongate, stems enveloped by cylindric leaf sheaths and carrying alternate, leathery, linear-lanceolate, contracted and slightly conduplicate basally, unequally notched apically, 8-13 cm long and 0.7-1.2 cm width leaves.

Ames' Trichoglottis blooms on a short to 0.4" (1 cm) long , several (10) flowered inflorescence. The flowers are 1.5 cm in diameter and can be red, yellow or white. The elliptical dorsal petal is concave and the upper half is bending over the backbone. The side outer petals may be elliptical or sharpened. The rather concave flakes of the inner whorl are elongated. The 3-lobed lip has raised, elongated side parts that are joined to the base of the column. The central part of the lip is thick, round, sometimes concave, with a pair of thickening around the center.

TRICHOGLOTTIS AMESIANA CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Trichoglottis amesiana needs a light level of 15000-25000 lux. The light should be filtered and dispersed, and the plants should not be directly exposed to the midday sun. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time. If the plant grows properly but does not bloom, it may require increasing the amount of light. Also, when the sections between the nodes on the stem or leaves are longer than those given in the description or when the leaves are rather soft and delicate, the plant probably does not receive enough light.

Temperature:

 It is a thermophilic plant. In summer the average day temperature is 29-31 ° C, night 22 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 7-9 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is 31-32 ° C, the night 19-20 ° C, with a daily amplitude of 10-11 ° C. In winter the average day temperature is 28-29 ° C, at 19-20 ° C at night, which gives a daily difference of 9-10 ° C.

Humidity:

Ames' Trichoglottis need the humidity of 80-85% from summer to autumn, then it decreases to 70-75% during winter and spring.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Trichoglottis amesiana are usually grown in hanging pots or slatted baskets, filled with loose, easily drying substrate. Sometimes the plants are grown with only a small amount of charcoal or large pieces of bark of the cork oak, so that only keep the plants in the right position. A long stem may require support. The roots should grow freely and float as it suits them. You should not cut them just to make them look neat.

Watering:

During active growth from late spring to autumn, the plants should be watered frequently, but in the autumn, watering should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

During the active growth, the plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. You can use fertilizer with reduced nitrogen content and increased amount of phosphorus in the autumn, which supports abundant flowering in the next season.

Rest period:

Trichoglottis amesiana need less water in the winter, especially if they grow under the conditions of a dark, short day occurring in moderate latitudes. However, it is not allowed to excessively dry the plants or allow them to stay dry for a long time. Fertilization should be limited or should be completely abandoned until spring, when stronger watering resumes.
