IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM HERCOGLOSSUM
Dendrobium hercoglossum is native to Sumatra, Malaya, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, China and the Philippines. In China, these plants are found in Kwangtung, Hainan and Hong Kong at an altitude of 600-1260 m. In Sumatra, a single plant are collected from a tree near Padang at an altitude of about 30 m. They often grow on trees near streams.
It is a large sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte, which reaching 25-45 cm in height, with slender, subclavate, clustered, 20-35 cm long stems that are almost totally enveloped by leaf sheaths and carrying distichous, linear-lanceolate, obtusely and unequally bilobed apically 5-10 cm long leaves.
The Rampart Lip Dendrobium blooms in spring though winter on a short to 1 1/2", axillary, 2 to 8 flowered raceme that arises from the nodes at or near the apex of the leafless or leafy stems with waxy, flat, showy, slightly fragrant flowers. The flowers are 2.5 cm in diameter. The petals of both whorls may be pink, bright purple or white at the base with slightly purple tips. The white lip, shorter than the petals of the outer coat, is tinted green or creamy and has a bright purple top. The inner surface of the middle plot is gently covered with a can, apart from the pointed point. The cover of the anther chamber is dark purple.
DENDROBIUM HERCOGLOSSUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium hercoglossum needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux.
Temperature:
It is a plant with moderate thermal requirements. The average temperature of the summer day is 27 ° C, night 18 ° C, giving a daily difference of 8-9 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is 29 ° C, the night 15-18 ° C giving a daily difference of 11-14 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 26-28 ° C, the night 13-14 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 12-14 ° C.
Humidity:
In summer and autumn, The Rampart Lip Dendrobium needs the average humidity of 80-85%, and in the middle of winter it drops to 65%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium hercoglossum can be mounted on tree ferns or cork, if we can ensure high humidity and watering at least once a day in the summer. If you grow plants in pots, you can use any loose, quickly drying substrate. Repotting is best done in early spring when new roots begin to grow.
Watering:
Precipitation is moderate to heavy from late spring to autumn, but in winter and early spring conditions are much drier. Dendrobium hercoglossum should be kept in moisture during the growing season, but in autumn the amount of water should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to use a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. From spring to mid-summer, high nitrogen fertilizer is preferred, and then until the end of autumn, go to the high phosphorus fertilizer.
Rest period:
The amount of water and fertilizers should be reduced during the period of 2 to 3 months in the winter. Plants should dry out between waterings, but they can not stay dry for a long period of time. Watering and fertilization are resumed only with the onset of new growth in the spring.
