Dendrobium amethystoglossum, also called Amythest Colored Dendrobium, Callista amethystoglossa, Pedilonum amethystoglossum, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1872.
IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM AMETHYSTOGLOSSUM
Dendrobium amethystoglossum is native to northwest part of the island of Luzon (Philippines). They occur in the province of Benguet, where they often grow on mossy, limestone cliffs, at an altitude of about 1,400 m.
It is a medium to large sized, lithophytic, cold to warm growing species which can reach a height of 45-100 cm, with clustered, erect, or arching, long, cane-like, often fractiflex, ridged, 60-90 cm long stems carry several, oval, pale green, deciduous, shiny, leathery, ascendingly curved backward, 8-10 cm long leaves. The leaves usually fall before flowers appear, but sometimes the leaves survive for more than one growing season.
Amethyst Colored Dendrobium blooms in the winter on a axillary, pendant, 6" (15 cm) long, densely 15 to 20 flowered raceme with fragrant, drooping, long-lasting flowers that arise from nodes at the apex of the leafless canes but occasionally on leafy ones. The flowers are 3.0-3.8 cm in diameter. The white petals of both whorls open completely and may have an amethyst coloration of the tips. The lip is tubular and has a wide, bright purple spot in the middle. All parts of the flower are sharp.
DENDROBIUM AMETHYSTOGLOSSUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium amethystoglossum loves a lot of light; the intensity must be 30000-50000 lux and is able to tolerate direct sunlight (up to 55000 lux). The recommended photoperiod is 12 hours.
Temperature:
It is a cold-loving plant. In summer, the average day temperature is 22-24 ° C, the average night 16 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 6-8 ° C. If they are grown in warmer conditions it may be difficult to grow, and the buds may fall. In winter, the average daytime temperatures are 22-24 ° C, and the night 13-14 ° C, with an amplitude of 9-10 ° C. These plants easily adapt to temperatures reaching only 10 ° C in winter, and the minimum temperature can drop up to 6 ° C.
Humidity:
Amethyst Colored Dendrobium needs a humidity level of 85-90% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Plants can be fixed on pieces of tree ferns or planted into pots filled with any loose substrate that retains moisture. Repotting is best done after flowering, at the end of the drought period.
Watering:
In the period of active growth (from late spring to autumn), Dendrobium amethystoglossum should have a constantly moist, but not soggy soil, while when new increments reach maturity, the amount of water should be gradually reduced. This watering scheme is extremely important.
Fertilizer:
Plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a fertilizer richer in phosphorus should be used in late summer and autumn.
Rest period:
Dendrobium amethystoglossum require a cool, dry winter rest for a minimum of 2 months, but it can take up to 4 months. The plants should be allowed to dry a little before the next watering, but it must not be allowed to remain dry for a long period of time.
