Dendrobium vexillarius is native to New Guinea, New Ireland and Moluccas Islands. These plants grow on the tops of horizontal branches of trees in rain forests, mountain forests, shrubs and meadows. At high altitudes, they usually grow epiphytically on the surface of the ground in deep layers of peat, humus and mosses. They usually grow at heights of 2000-3500 m, but some varieties occur at heights of just 1100 m.

Dendrobium vexillarius care and culture

It is a small sized, cool to cold epiphyte, which reaching 13-25 cm in height, with cylindrical, light green, 13-25 cm long stems carrying 2 to 5 apical, pointed, dark green on top, gray green below, 5-15 cm long leaves.

The Flag-Carrying Dendrobium blooms at most any time of the year on an erect, short, few to several flowered raceme that arises from the nodes of leafed and leafless canes with 2 to 7, shiny, color variable flowers that can last for months. The flowers are 2.2-5.0 cm long. They have ovoid to oval-elliptical dorsal petal, ovoid-triangular lateral outer petals and slightly oval petals of inner whorl. The lip is almost oblong, has a curved top edge and small, rounded side plots.

The color of the flowers is very variable and depends on the variety: Dendrobium vexillarius var. albiviride (The petals of both whorls are pale greenish-white to pale yellow and the lip is green with an orange tip), Dendrobium vexillarius var. elworthyi (The petals of both whorls are orange to reddish-orange and the dark lip may be purple to almost black with an orange tip), Dendrobium vexillarius var. microblepharum (The petals of both whorls are orange, orange-red or orange-yellow), Dendrobium vexillarius var. retroflexum (The petals of both whorls are greenish-blue, blue, bluish-gray or gray, often tinted violet and the lip is dark purple, almost black, with a dark orange-red top), Dendrobium vexillarius var. uncinatum (The petals of both whorls are usually pinkish-purple, but some clones are pale yellow, orange, carmine, crimson, purple-red or blue and the lip is dark, with a dark pinkish-red top. Those that grow in full sun have more bright colors), Dendrobium vexillarius var. vexillarius (The flowers are yellow to greenish-yellow).
