Dendrobium capituliflorum is widely distributed in the Pacific islands. They grow at heights of 5-870 m. On New Guinea they occur in coastal areas, but on the Solomon Islands they occur on the tops of ridges. In other areas, they are found in river ravines, in rain forests, in open secondary forests and on rock debris.
Dendrobium capituliflorum, also called as White Bottle-Brush Orchid, Small-Headed Flower Dendrobium, Dendrobium confusum, Pedilonum capituliflorum, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by Rolfe in 1907.
IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM CAPITULIFLORUM
Dendrobium capituliflorum is widely distributed in the Pacific islands. They grow at heights of 5-870 m. On New Guinea they occur in coastal areas, but on the Solomon Islands they occur on the tops of ridges. In other areas, they are found in river ravines, in rain forests, in open secondary forests and on rock debris.
White Bottle-Brush Orchid is a small sized, cool to hot growing epiphyte and also a lithophyte, which reaching 10-25 cm in height, with spindle to cylindrical-shaped, several noded, constricted basally, 10-25 cm long pseudobulbs carrying many, apical dark to gray green on the upper side and velvety purple on the underside, thin, leathery, narrowly lanceolate to elliptical, unequally bilobed apically leaves.
Small-Headed Flower Dendrobium blooms with a ball-like cluster of many flowers that arise from the nodes closer to the middle and base of mature leafy and leafless canes arising on dense ovoid clusters of suberect, 3/4" to 1 1/2" (2 to 4 cm) long inflorescence occurring in winter through mid spring. The flowers are 1.3 cm in diameter and do not open completely. They are green and white with green tops of the outer whorls petals, the lip and the cover of the anther chamber. The flowers can be smooth or covered with hairs and uneven. They have an oval ridge petal and smaller lateral outer petals. Longitudinal-lanceolate petals of the inner whorl have sharp tips. Mentum has the same length as the free parts of the side outer petals. All parts are white to cream with a green shade. The greenish lip is ovoid-lanceolate, sharp-tipped and concave. The anther chamber is also greenish.
DENDROBIUM CAPITULIFLORUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium capituliflorum needs a light level of 12000-20000 lux.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the day throughout the year is 31-34 ° C, the night 20-23 ° C, giving a daily difference of 9-12 ° C.
Humidity:
White Bottle-Brush Orchid needs a humidity of 75-80% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium capituliflorum can be grown mounted on tree-fern rootstocks or cork provided that high humidity is ensured and watering is done at least once a day in summer. When growing in pots, shallow containers are recommended filled with any loose, quickly drying ground. Repotting is best done when new roots grow.
Watering:
Water is moderate for most of the year, but in the period of 4-5 months in summer and early autumn is more wet. During this period, Dendrobium capituliflorum should be thoroughly irrigated, after which they should be allowed to lightly dry. In autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to feed the plant weekly or every 2 week 1/4-1/2 dose of fertilizer for orchids. Balanced fertilizer should be used for a round year.
Rest period:
The given cultivation temperatures should be maintained throughout the year. In winter, Dendrobium capituliflorum should dry a little longer between watering, but they can not stay dry for too long. Fertilization should be reduced until spring, when watering increases.
