IDENTIFY BRASSIA REX ORCHID HYBRID

It is a hybrid of the Brassia genus with two-leafed, pear-shaped, with facets, reach a length of up to 12 cm, and several small leaves at the bottom pseudobulb and lanceolate, fairly wide leaves.

Brassia rex blooms from up to 35 cm in length peduncles with up o 20 fragrant flowers. The flowers are in the shape of stars, light green in brown spots and points, the size of about 10 to 17 cm in diameter.

BRASSIA REX ORCHID HYBRID CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Brassia rex loves bright sunlight and is able to tolerate direct morning and evening sun, however, in the hot summer noon (especially on windows of southern orientation), the orchid should be protected from direct sunlight: put behind a curtain (for example, on a table near the window) or in the shade of other plants, otherwise the plant can get a sunburn. Good lighting is one of the prerequisites for blooming this hybrid, and if it is not enough, then the blossom orchid will simply not be, as new pseudobulbs grow underdeveloped, i.e. incapable of flowering. During the whole year, the duration of the light day should be at least 8-10 hours.

Temperature:

This hybrid belongs to a moderate temperature regime, and throughout the year the plants are recommended to be kept under the following temperature conditions: Day temperature at 20-24 ° C (maximum 32 ° C); Night temperature at 16-18 ° C. For the successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always at least 4 ° C lower than the daytime temperature.

Humidity:

Brassia rex needs the humidity level from 40 to 60%. Too dry air negatively affects the overall development of the plant - its growth is inhibited, the roots lying on the surface begin to dry out, and the leaves become flabby and turn yellow.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

This orchid hybrid can grow in ordinary plastic or clay pots. Some special addictions about the substrate does not have and grows great in any purchased mixture with a large content of peat and sphagnum.

Repotting is desirable only in cases of highly compaction of the substrate, at its critically high or low pH (above 6.5) or when the plant grows very large and the pot becomes narrow (pseudobulbs begin to hang from the sides pot). The best time to transplant is the spring period, when new orchid sprouts reach a size of 5 cm and begin to build their own roots.

Watering:

Watering this hybrid directly depends on the overall temperature of the content, the lower it is, the less and less often it will be necessary to water it. Excess water during watering should flow freely out of the pot, as the stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pan can very quickly lead to decay of the roots and the lower part of the plant. During active growth, the substrate between waterings should be relatively dry, but not completely dry, i.e. is always in a slightly moistened, but not wet state. In the rest of the time, the plant may dry completely.

Fertilizer:

During the new growth period, this hybrid is fertilized once a month in the usual fertilizer concentration indicated on the package. In addition to the usual root top dressing, it is also recommended to produce a foliar dressing, when a very much diluted fertilizer is sprayed on the outer part of the plant. It is best to feed the orchid, alternating both these methods.

Rest period:

To stimulate flowering, Brassia Rex needs a clearly defined but very short period of rest. It begins when new, young shoots reach the size of old ones and begin to turn into pseudobulbs (rounded), and is expressed in the fact that the orchid is kept somewhat drier and colder than usual and does not fertilize. The most recommended temperature is 15 ° C, however, in some cases, a warmer regime is possible: 17-18 ° C during the day and 15 ° C at night. Watering the orchids should be coordinated with respect to lower temperatures and produced a little bit from the calculation, so that the substrate between watering not only dried well, but it was completely dry for 5-7 days. With the advent of peduncles, the rest period ends: the watering of the orchid resumes in the usual volume, and the overall temperature of the contents rises.
