Dockrillia wassellii is native to Northeast Australia. These plants only meet at the McIlwraith Department on the Cape York Peninsula. They grow on the outskirts of the climbing Araucaria forests, in areas with high levels of light and strong air traffic at heights of around 300 m. They are usually epiphytes, but sometimes they also grow on rocks. For unknown reasons, the plants growing on rocks are usually much larger than those found on trees.
