Epiphyllum anguliger is endemic to Mexico, where it is distributed in moist montane forest and Quercus forest in the States of Guerrero, Jalisco, Nayarit and Oaxaca at elevations of 1100 to 1800 meters above sea level.

Epiphyllum anguliger care and culture

It is an epiphytic cactus with smooth green skin and extensively branched stems. The primary stems are often woody. Secondary stems are flat and succulent, 20–30 cm long, 3–5 cm wide, and deeply lobed. The areoles are small, glabrous or with 1-2 white bristles.

Fishbone Cactus blooms in the end of summer or in autumn with 6-20 cm long and 6-7 cm wide flowers. The flower-leg is 8-16 cm long, 4 mm thick, pale yellow, greenish or pinkish in color; bracts are few, small, linear, green. The outer leaves of the perianth are ten, they are linear to linear-lanceolate, acute, spread or bent, 4-5 cm long, lemon-yellow to brownish-yellow. The inner leaves of the perianth are lanceolate to oval, acute or pointed, white, sometimes with jagged edges, approximately the same length as the outer leaves. The stamens are arranged in two rows, white, upright to the bent, length almost the same as the perianth leaves. Pestle white, longer than tepals, stigma with 8-11 lobes. Its produces egg-shaped, brownish, greenish or yellowish, 3-4 cm thick fruits.

EPIPHYLLUM ANGULIGER CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Epiphyllum anguliger needs a moderate light level. In summer, if possible, you can keep the plant outdoors in a shady place.

Temperature:

This cactus loves heat and high humidity. The temperature should be 16-25 ° C, short-term drops of 10-15 ° C are permissible. It is necessary to spray the plant daily, and the pots should stand on pallets or plates with moist pebbles.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

This cactus should be grow in the hanging baskets, consisting of one part of coarse sand and perlite and three parts of a mixture based on peat. Every spring, the plant needs to be repotted into a slightly larger pot, until it reaches the capacity of 13-15 cm in diameter. After repotting, simply shake off the old soil mixture from the roots and plant this cactus in an old washed pot, adding the right amount fresh soil.

Watering:

In spring and summer, watering should be abundant, so that the soil mixture is moist. After each flowering season, the cactus needs a short rest period - during the next two or three weeks the watering should be rare to prevent the soil from drying out. The rest of the time you need a moderate watering. The top layer of the soil should dry completely by about 1 cm in between the irrigation.

Fertilizer:

After tying buds, you need to feed the cactus every two weeks with fertilizer for tomatoes. When flowers blossom, the fertilization should be stopped.

Grow from seeds:

Cactus seedlings are very fragile on the first weeks and survival depends on how they are treated on that crucial stage; out of 100 of seeds in the wild only a few survive to an adult plant to produce seeds and start the cycle again. Obtaining a high percentage of adult plants from a batch of seedlings, depends on how each collector takes care of their seedlings.

Water for seedlings is the most important item to keep them growing for first few weeks. Generally, most seedlings, which are 1 week old will die after 3 days of dryness. 2 month-old seedlings can survive for 1 week if allowed to dry. 6 month-old seedlings can survive for 2 months if allowed to dry. 1 year-old seedlings can survive for 5 months if allowed to dry.

Planting instructions for 4”pot kit: First, clean with water and chlorine plastic pot, clear cover and label and wash with fresh water. Second, the soil can be sterilized for 2 hours at 120º C in an oven or a microwave but can be used without sterilization. Third, fill the pot with soil and spray with distilled, reverse osmosis or pure rainwater to let soil flatten at the top. Fourth, place to 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of Dyna Rock or crushed sea shell extra fine on top to cover the soil making a layer between soil and seeds. Fifth, place seeds over the Dyna Rock and fine spray water the seeds well and cover with a clearcover.
