Erycina crista-galli is native to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. In Mexico, these plants are found in mountain rainforests and coffee plantations in the southern states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz at heights of 400-1850 m. In Guatemala, they are found in trees in damp forests up to 1800 m in the Chimaltenango, Huehuetenango departments and Mazatenango. Although in Mexico and Guatemala they are found in a wide range of heights, in Central America they are found in damp forests in the lowlands and medium altitudes (500-1200 m), and in Nicaragua grow on dry branches of trees in dense forests.

Erycina crista-galli care and culture

It is a miniature sized, cool to hot growing epiphyte with an elliptic-ovoid, 1.0-1.5 cm long and 0.5-1.0 cm wide pseudobulb subtended by several foliaceous bracts and has an aborted apical leaf and several linear-lanceolate, 0.3-1.5 cm long and 0.1-0.2 cm wide leaves arising from the bracts.

The Cock's Comb Erycina blooms with one to few flowers on a axillary, erect or arching, 7 cm long, 1 to 4 successive, opening flowers per racemose inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb that can have 3 to 4 to a pseudobulb and blooms in the summer and fall but can bloom a second time later if kept happy. The flowers are very large for the size of the plant and are 2-3 cm long and 1.7-2.2 cm wide. The simple, elliptical-oval ridge petal is greenish-yellow, slightly concave, has a dorsal bulge. Invisible lateral outer petals are also greenish-yellow and pressed to the back of the lip. They are rather oval-oblong to stripe, pointed. The broadly spread petals of the inner whorl are bright yellow with transverse reddish brown stripes often have very wavy edges. A very large, wide spread, 3-spotted lip is bright yellow with a white bulge with several reddish brown spots. The base of the lip is shortened and located close to the base of the spine. The unfolded side plots are rounded, undulated, shell-like edges. The central shape of the blade is much wider at the base than at the apex. It has a shell shape, wavy edges and is divided into 4 particles. The particles of the transverse pair are rounded and unfolded, and the pair at the apex is obliquely wedge shaped and a centrally located deep incision at the apex. The thickening is considerable, distributed, fleshy, a slightly rounded plane with curved and stiff edges on each side is supported by semi-circular, rigid processes. The top of the bead ends with a short, complex, fleshy hood. The very short rod has flap-shaped side wings.

ERYCINA CRISTA-GALLI CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Erycina crista-galli needs a light level of 18000-25000 lux.

Erycina crista-galli care and culture

Temperature:

The average temperature of the day in summer is 29-30 ° C, night 17 ° C, giving a daily difference of 12-13 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is then 31-33 ° C, the night 15-18 ° C, and the daily difference is 14-18 ° C.

Humidity:

In the summer and early autumn, The Cock's Comb Erycina needs the humidity of 75-80%, and then from late autumn until spring it drops to 60-65%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Erycina crista-galli can be mounted on tree rootstocks or cork, if high humidity is ensured and watering is done at least once a day in summer. Repotting can be performed when new roots grow.

Watering:

Precipitation is very abundant from late spring until autumn. Monthly average falls then quite rapidly and the 4-month dry season is coming up until the beginning of spring. The cultivated plants should be abundantly watered during active growth, but their roots must dry quickly after watering. The substrate around the roots can never be soggy or dense. When new growths reach maturity in autumn, the amount of water should be reduced.

Fertilizer:

It is recommended to apply weekly or every two weeks 1/4-1/2 doses of balanced fertilizer to orchids during active growth.

Rest period:

In winter, the amount of water should be reduced, but the Erycina crista-galli can not be dry for a longer period. Occasional, light fogging in the early morning between waterings should provide enough moisture. Fertilization should be eliminated until spring, when new growths appear and heavy watering is undertaken.
