IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM SUBULIFERUM
Dendrobium subuliferum is native to New Guinea. In Irian Jaya (western New Guinea), these plants are meet on the Vogelkop peninsula, in the Gautier and Star mountains, and on Mt.Goliath. In Papua, they grow in the provinces of West Sepik, the Southern Upland and Morobe. They usually occur in primary and secondary forests at heights of 300-2000 m, but sometimes grow on the ground in shady moss-covered locations.
It is a mini-miniature sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte and occasional terrestrial, which reaching a height of 3 cm, with close set, ovoid to narrowly fusiform, 0.3-0.9 cm long pseudobulbs carrying 1 to 2, apical, distichous, conduplicate, erect to suberect, thinly leathery, usually rigid, sometimes minutely papillose, ligulate, acute to obtuse, rigid, curved, 1.8-2.8 cm long leaves with minute warts on the margins.
The Awl Shaped Dendrobium blooms on a terminal, very short inflorescence arising towards the apex of the leafy stem and carry a single to rarely 2, erect, fully open, sometimes fragrant flowers occurring in the fall through spring. The flowers are 0.8-1.2 cm in diameter. Sharp flower elements are arranged like an open, 5-pointed star. The flowers are white with a purple tinge along the lip of the lip. The dorsal petal has several tiny dots along the bottom edge. Almost oval petals have delicate growths along the banks. The sharp tip is long-lanceolate, straight and curved. It is almost 3-bay with a 2-section, transverse bead.
DENDROBIUM SUBULIFERUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium subuliferum needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux.
Temperature:
Throughout the year, the average day temperature is 26-28 ° C, the night 15-17 ° C, giving a daily difference of 10-13 ° C.
Humidity:
The Awl Shaped Dendrobium needs the humidity of 70-75% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium subuliferum can be grown in live sphagnum over the bark, or on tree rootstocks, if the humidity is high. Repotting can be done at any time as soon as new roots grow.
Watering:
Rainfall is moderate throughout the year. During the winter months, the conditions are a bit more dry. The plants should be allowed only a slight drying out between waterings.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to apply weekly or every two weeks 1/4-1/2 doses of balanced fertilizer to orchids throughout the year.
Rest period:
The amount of water and fertilization in winter should be slightly reduced, especially when Dendrobium subuliferum grown in the conditions of a short and dark day at moderate latitudes. However, they can never dry up completely.
