Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum care and culture

Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum is native to Vietnam. They are found near Dalat at elevations of 1400 to 1500 meters.

 Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum also called as The Half-Black Lip Dendrobium, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by André Guillaumin in 1957.

IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM HEMIMELANOGLOSSUM

 Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum is native to Vietnam. They are found near Dalat at elevations of 1400 to 1500 meters above sea level.

 It is a small sized, cool growing epiphyte or terrestrial, which reaching a height of 20 cm, with cylyndrical, angled at each node, 20 cm long stems carrying many, deciduous, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, very thin, membraneous, slightly distichous, 7 cm long leaves.

 The Half-Black Lip Dendrobium blooms in the fall and winter on a pendant, very slender, 8" (20 cm) long, 1 to 3 flowered inflorescence arising from the nodes along the stem with fragrant flowers. The flowers are 1 cm long. The dorsal petal and inner whorl petals are spread out and have 3-5 purple nerves. The side petals are curved in the shape of a sickle. The 3-segment lip is green and its top is dark purple. The middle plot is longer than the petals of both whorls. It has wavy edges and 3 rounded bulges, enlarged at the apex. At the base of the lip these bumps are thinner, straight and irregular. The anther chamber is yellow-green.

Light:

 Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum needs a light level of 20000-25000 lux and the level of light in the summer should be quite low.

Temperature:

 The average temperature of the summer day is 27 ° C, the night 18 ° C, and the daily difference is 8-9 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is 29 ° C, the night 15-18 ° C, and the daily difference is 11-14 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 26-28 ° C, the night 13-14 ° C, and the daily difference is 12-14 ° C.

Humidity:

 In summer and autumn, The Half-Black Lip Dendrobium needs the average humidity of 80-85%, but in the middle of winter it drops to almost 65%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

 Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum can be grown on tree rootstocks or cork, high humidity is ensured and watering is done at least once a day in summer. If they are grown in pots, it is necessary to provide any loose, quickly drying substrate. Repotting is best done at the beginning of spring, when new roots begin to grow.

Watering:

 From late spring until autumn, the precipitation is moderate to heavy, but in the winter and early spring it is drier. During the growing season Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum should be constantly moist, but in the autumn the amount of water should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

 It is recommended to apply a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. From spring to mid-summer should be used fertilizer enriched with nitrogen, and then until the end of autumn fertilizer enriched with phosphorus.

Rest period:

 The amount of water and fertilization should be limited to Dendrobium hemimelanoglossum for 2-3 months of winter. They must dry out between waterings, but they can not stay dry for too long.
