Dendrobium henryi is native to North Vietnam and southwestern China. These plants grow near Sa-pa (Vietnam) at an altitude of about 1500 m and near Szemao in the Province of Yunnan (China) at an altitude of around 1200 m. They were also found at an altitude of only 600 m.
Dendrobium henryi also called as Henry's Dendrobium (named to honor an English/American Plant Collector in China), Dendrobium daoense, Dendrobium evaginatum, Grastidium daoense, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by Rudolf Schlechter in 1921.
IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM HENRYI
Dendrobium henryi is native to North Vietnam and southwestern China. These plants grow near Sa-pa (Vietnam) at an altitude of about 1500 m and near Szemao in the Province of Yunnan (China) at an altitude of around 1200 m. They were also found at an altitude of only 600 m.
It is a small to medium sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte or terrestro-lithophyte, which can reach a height of 30-80 cm, with cylindrical, angled at each node, 30-80 cm long stems carrying many deciduous, thin, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, acute, slightly distichous, 6-10 cm long leaves.
Henry's Dendrobium blooms in the late spring through early fall on a slender, 0.8 to 2.3" (2 to 5 cm) long, 1 to 3 flowered inflorescence arising from the nodes of leafless canes and carrying fragrant flowers. The yellow flowers are 5-6 cm in diameter. The lance-oval petals of both whorls are smooth and slightly sharpened. The almost round lip is concave and has a finely curled edge. Below the base is densely covered with short, stiff hairs.
DENDROBIUM HENRYI CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium henryi needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux. Distributed light is recommended.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the summer day is 23 ° C, the night 17-18 ° C, giving a daily difference of 6 ° C. The average temperature for 2-3 winter months is 11-14 ° C, the night 5-8 ° C, with a daily difference of 6 ° C.
Humidity:
Henry's Dendrobium needs the humidity of 85-93% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium henryi can be grown on tree ferns or cork, however, it is necessary to maintain high humidity, and in the summer to ensure watering at least once a day. They can also be grown in pots filled with loose, quickly drying substrate. Repotting is best done when new roots grow.
Watering:
Precipitation is abundant from spring to autumn, but in the winter it is much drier. Dendrobium henryi should be kept moist during active growth, but in autumn, when new growths reach maturity, the amount of water should be reduced.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to use a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. From spring to mid-summer, high-nitrogen fertilizer is preferred, but then until the end of autumn it is necessary to switch to high-phosphoric fertilizer.
Rest period:
Dendrobium henryi in the winter should receive less water, they should allow little drying between waterings, but they can never dry up completely. In addition to the active growth period, fertilization should be reduced or eliminated.
