Dendrobium dickasonii is native to Myanmar, India and Thailand. In western Myanmar, these plants were found growing on rhododendron bushes at an altitude of about 1800 m. They are also found in the Mandalay region and in the Chin Hills region. In northern Thailand, they grow near Chiang Mai at an altitude of about 1600 m. They are found in north-eastern India near Manipur and Lushai Hills at an altitude of about 1520 m.

Dendrobium dickasonii care and culture

It is a miniature sized, cool growing epiphyte, which can reach a height of 6.5-15 cm, with slender to swollen, spindle-shaped, 5-10 cm long pseudobulbs carrying 2 to 8, glossy, linear to elliptic-lanceolate, 3.0-6.5 cm long leaves.

Dickason's Dendrobium blooms in the late winter to the early summer on a lateral, 0.8 to 1.2" (2 to 3 cm) long, 1 to rarely 3 flowered inflorescence arising from the upper nodes of an older, mature cane and carrying very large for the size of the plant, orange-scented flowers. The flowers are 5-6 cm in diameter by the lateral outer petals after they are unfolded, but these flower elements tend to curl. These orange flowers are unique, effective and brightly colored. The flakes of both whorls may have a color from cinnabar-red to fiery. The outer whorls are narrow and may have darker dots, while the inner whorl petals are paler. The large lip has undulating edges and darker lines. The cover of the anther chamber is white.

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Dendrobium dickasonii needs a light level of 25000-35000 lux. Bright light, strong air movement are recommended, and some shading is necessary from spring to autumn, but the level of light should be as high as possible, but not to allow the leaves to burn.

Temperature:

 The average temperature of the summer day is 23-25 ° C, the night 16-17 ° C, giving a daily difference of 7-9 ° C. In spring, the average temperature of the day is 27-28 ° C, night 10-16 ° C, giving a daily difference of 11-18 ° C. In winter, the average day temperature is 22-25 ° C, the night 6-7 ° C, giving a daily difference of 15-18 ° C.

Humidity:

Dickason's Dendrobium needs a humidity level of 75-85% from late spring to autumn. At the end of winter and early spring, the humidity drops to 60%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Dendrobium dickasonii can be grown mounted on rootstocks with tree fern or cork or in pots filled with any loose, quickly drying substrate. Repotting is best done at the beginning of spring when new roots begin to grow.

Watering:

Water is moderate to heavy from late spring to early autumn, but in winter their amount drops significantly. This plants should be constantly moist during the period of active growth, but when the new growth reaches maturity in autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

It is recommended to apply a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. From spring to mid-summer, it is preferable to use high-nitrogen fertilizer, and then to the end of autumn, high phosphorus fertilizer.

Rest period:

Cool, dry rest of the cultivated plants is especially important for these plants and should last until the spring of new increments. For the period of 3 winter months, Dendrobium dickasonii should be able to tolerate temperature drops to a few degrees below 0 ° C, but when cultivating such extreme conditions should be avoided. During very cold weather, the plants have a chance to survive without damage if they are dry.

You can complete elimination of water in winter, but the plants will be healthier, if for the majority of the winter they will dry between watering, but they will not dry for too long. For a period of 1-2 months at the end of winter, the plants should dry out completely between waterings and stay dry for a bit longer. Occasional morning fogging between waterings will protect the plant from over drying. Fertilization should be significantly reduced or eliminated until spring, when the amount of water increases.
