IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM GRIFFITHIANUM
Dendrobium griffithianum is native to Myanmar and mountains of northern and western Thailand. These unusual plants grow high on trees at heights of around 400 m above sea level.
It is a medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte, which reaching 30-45 cm in height, with clavate-fusiform, thicker towards the apex, deeply sulcate, to 5 noded, shiny yellow, 30-45 cm long stems carrying 2 to 3, apical, leathery, ovate or oblong, very shortly petiolate, acute 9-10 cm long leaves.
Griffith's Dendrobium blooms on a 6 to 10" (15 to 25 cm) long, suberect to pendant, loosely few to many flowered inflorescence arising on the nodes at or near the apex of the cane with long-lasting flowers occurring in the spring. The flowers are 4-5 cm in diameter. The petals of both whorls are bright, golden-yellow with a darker lip, which in the throat becomes almost orange. The lip is covered with hairs or curled along the edges and velvety on the upper surface, in addition to the center.
DENDROBIUM GRIFFITHIANUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium griffithianum needs a light level of 25000-35000 lux.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the summer day is 30-32 ° C, night 22 ° C, giving a daily difference of 8-9 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is 34-36 ° C, night 16-22 ° C, giving a daily difference of 12-18 ° C. In winter the average day temperature is 28-31 ° C, night 11-13 ° C, giving a daily difference of 15-18 ° C.
Humidity:
In summer and autumn, Griffith's Dendrobium needs the humidity of 80-85%, while in winter and spring it drops to 65-75%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium griffithianum can be mounted on tree ferns or cork, but then require high humidity and summer watering at least once a day. If they are grown in pots, a very loose, quickly drying substrate should be used. Repotting is best done in the spring when new roots begin to grow.
Watering:
From the end of spring until the beginning of autumn, the precipitation is moderate to heavy. Dendrobium griffithianum should be kept moist during active growth, but in autumn, when new growths reach maturity, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
Weekly 1/4-1/2 doses are recommended. From spring to mid-summer, it is recommended to use high-nitrogen fertilizer, and then until the end of autumn, high phosphorus fertilizer.
Rest period:
Dendrobium griffithianum needs a rest period of 2-3 months. In winter, the plants should dry between watering, but they can not stay dry for too long. Fertilization should be eliminated until spring, when regular watering begins.
