IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM CAPRA
Dendrobium capra is native to the Lesser Sunda Islands and eastern Java. They grow epiphytically on trees at low altitudes. They are often found in forests, on teak plantations at the foot of Mt. Penenggungan north of Mt. Arjuna.
It is a miniature to medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte, which can reach a height of 10-43 cm, with erect, somewhat fractiflex, dull green, centrally swollen, 10-43 cm long canes carrying 4 to 7, linear-lanceolate, acute, 8-13 cm long leaves that are shiny green when young and may have black spots.
The Goat-Like Dendrobium blooms in the fall and early winter on an axillary, 4 to 12" (10 to 31 cm) long, laxly, 5 to 20 flowered inflorescence. The flowers are 3 cm in diameter. The outer whorls are slender, and the petals of the inner whorl are narrower. None of them are twisted, they may have a lime green color to greenish yellow with gray stripes below the middle. The paler lip is almost yellow with dark, brownish-purple spots on the side plots and on the bulges.
DENDROBIUM CAPRA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium capra needs a light level of 30000-40000 lux. Cultivated plants in the summer should be shaded. In the rest of the year, they should be provided with the highest possible level of light, so as not to burn the leaves. Strong air movement is very important, especially when the light level is high.
Temperature:
Throughout the year, the average day temperature is 31-32 ° C, the night 21-24 ° C, and the daily difference is 8-10 ° C.
Humidity:
In summer and autumn, the average humidity is 80-85%, in winter it drops to almost 75%, and in the spring it is only 65-70%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium capra can be grown on corkscrews, if you can provide high humidity and watered at least once a day in summer. When growing in pots, any loose, quickly drying ground can be used. Repotting can be done when new roots grow.
Watering:
Water is abundant in summer and early autumn, but in winter it is very dry. Cultivated plants should be kept moist in the growing season, with only a slight drying out between waterings, but at the end of autumn the amount of water should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to apply weekly or every 2 week 1/4-1/2 doses of balanced fertilizer to orchids during the growing season.
Rest period:
Dendrobium capra needs a dry winter rest for 1 to 2 months. In winter, the plants should be very lightly watered. They should dry out between waterings, but they can not stay dry for too long. For a period of 1-2 months at the end of winter the water should be limited to occasional fogging. Fertilization should be eliminated until spring, when regular watering begins.
