Chiloschista usneoides also called as Lichen-Like Chiloschista, Epidendrum usneoides, Sarcochilus usneoides, Thrixspermum usneoides, is a species of the genus Chiloschista. This species was described by John Lindley in 1832.
IDENTIFY CHILOSCHISTA USNEOIDES
Chiloschista usneoides is native to the region of the northern Himalayas, starting from Garhwal in the west, through Nepal up to Sikkim. These plants are found at an altitude of about 1650 m.
It is an almost leafless, hot to warm growing, miniature epiphyte or lithophyte with many long, twisted, tufted roots.
Lichen-Like Chiloschista blooms in the summer on an erect, pubescent, flexuous, 5.5 to 11 cm long, racemose inflorescence with a few fragrant flowers. The flowers are about 1.3 cm in diameter and widely spread, elongated, rounded at the ends petals of both whorls. The inner whorls are slightly wider than the petals of the outer whorl. The lip is shiny, similar in shape to the bag and 3-flap. Between her side parts lies a hairy shield. The rod is very short.
CHILOSCHISTA USNEOIDES CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Chiloschista usneoides needs a light level of 12000-18000 lux. It requires a medium bright position. The light should be filtered and dispersed, and the plants should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time. The plants grow best when placed within the range of humid, cool air current, near the outlet of a cold humidifier.
Temperature:
It is a plant with moderate thermal requirements. The average temperature of the summer day is 22-23 ° C, the night 17-18 ° C, which gives a daily spread of 5 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 12-13 ° C, the night 6-7 ° C, the daily amplitude is 7 ° C.
Humidity:
Lichen-Like Chiloschista needs the humidity of 90-95% in summer and early autumn, falling to 80-85% in other seasons.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Chiloschista usneoides do not produce leaves, and photosynthesis normally taking place in the leaves takes place in the roots. For this reason, it is the roots that must be exposed to sunlight. These plants are usually mounted on small branches. They usually grow better on relatively smooth surfaces, but it happens that they grow on pieces of tree fern. However, it is necessary to ensure high humidity, which means that in the summer the plants should be watered at least once a day. In the case of such suspended plants, during the dry and hot periods it may be necessary to water several times a day.
Watering:
In the period from late spring to autumn rainfall is abundant. Their number drops sharply in autumn, when there is a period of winter drought lasting 3-5 months. The cultivated plants should be frequently watered in the summer, but in the autumn the amount of water should be reduced.
Fertilizer:
During the period of strong growth, the plants should be fertilized every week with 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. In autumn, when watering is limited, fertilization should also be reduced.
Rest period:
In the period of 3-4 winter months, Chiloschista usneoides should dry before the next watering, but do not allow the plants remain dry for a long time. Delicate morning sprinkling every few days, especially during sunny weather, will protect the plants from over drying. Fertilization should be eliminated until spring, when stronger watering resumes.
