Maxillaria rufescens, also called as Light Fox-Red Maxillaria, Lycaste rugosa, Maxillaria abelei, Maxillaria articulata, Maxillaria fuscata, Maxillaria rugosa, Maxillaria vanillodora, Mormolyca rufescens, Xanthoxerampellia rufescens, is a species of the genus Maxillaria. This species was described by John Lindley in 1836.
DESCRIPTION OF MAXILLARIA RUFESCENS - LIGHT FOX-RED MAXILLARIA
Maxillaria rufescens is native to Tropical America. It is found growing on trees in wet tropical dense forests in Belize, Bolivia, Brazil North, Brazil Northeast, Brazil South, Brazil Southeast, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Leeward Is., Peru, Suriname, Trinidad-Tobago, Venezuela at elevations of 200-2000 meters above sea level.
It is a small to medium sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte with short rhizome. The pseudobulbs are unifoliate, cylindrical to ellipsoidal, compressed, 4 angled, up to 3 cm long, and are subtended by several, imbricate, distichous, membraneous sheaths. The single leaf is apical, sessile or shortly petiolate, narrowly elliptic, elliptic-oblong or lanceolate, coriaceous, acute, 10-30 cm long.
