It is an epiphyte with single-leaved pseudobulbs, narrowed down, 20-25 cm long and 3-3.5 cm wide, grow rather tightly to each other. The leaves are wide, their color depends on the intensity of illumination, so there are both green with a small proportion of purple pigment spots and pale green with a yellowish tinge, 30-35 cm long and about 7.5 cm wide. Peduncles appear from the top of the pseudobulb, reach a length of 10 cm. One peduncle has up to 5 fragrant flowers.

Laeliacattleya Memoria Robert Strait can bloom at any time of the year, especially preferring the summer period. Flowers of white-violet (or crimson) color, up to 16 cm in diameter, in the daytime it smells very nice, with the onset of darkness and in poor lighting the smell disappears. Sepalia lanceolate, with pointed tips, in the middle have a purple vein, measuring 6-7 cm in length and 2-2.5 cm in width. Petals ovoid, 6-7 cm long and 5-5.5 cm wide, also have a purple vein in the middle, wavy along the edge and often curved along the vein of the vein. The lip is triple purple, sometimes with a small yellow near the column, the front part of the lip below is divided into parts, very wavy on the edge, about 4 cm long and 5 cm wide. Column about 3 cm long.

Depending on some features in the structure of the flower and the color, this hybrid are distinguished: Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait 'Angie'; Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait 'Blue Hawaii'; Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait 'Blues'; Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait 'Carmela'; Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait 'Islander Delights'; Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait 'Lakeland'; Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait 'Sentinel' and others.

CATTLEYA MEMORIA ROBERT STRAIT ORCHID PLANT CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait loves bright sunshine and is able to calmly tolerate direct sunlight. If this orchid has been kept on dark place for quite a long time, then it is necessary to accustom it to a brighter sunlight gradually, otherwise it can get burned. The total duration of the day during the year should be at least 10-12 hours.

Temperature:

This hybrid belongs to the warm temperature, and throughout the year the plants are recommended to be kept under the following temperature conditions: summer temperature not above 32 ° C during the day and 16-20 ° C at night; winter temperature at 16-22 ° C during the day and not below 12 ° C at night. For successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature always be at least 4 ° C lower (ideally 10-12 ° C) than daytime.

Humidity:

Laeliacattleya Memoria Robert Strait need 35-60% humidity during the day and 60-80% at night. In conditions of high humidity, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the room where the plants are kept, since damp, stale air is an ideal medium for mass reproduction of various types of fungal and bacterial diseases.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait is grown mainly in ordinary plastic pots. This hybrid does not have any particular preferences regarding the substrate and grows well in any commercial mixture with a high content of peat and sphagnum.

This hybrid no need for frequent transplantations, therefore, it is advisable to transplant only in cases of strong compaction or salinization of the substrate, with its critically high or low (the normal is from 5.5 to 6.5) pH or when the plant grows very strongly and the pot will become cramped to it (pseudobulbs will begin to hang from the sides of the pot). The best time for transplanting is the spring period, when new orchid sprouts reach a size of 5 cm and begin to grow their own roots.

Watering:

Watering this hybrid directly depends on the total temperature of the content, the higher it is, the more often it will need to be watered, and vice versa. When watering, excess water should flow freely from the pot, since stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pan can very quickly lead to rotting of the roots and the lower part of the plant. The substrate between watering should dry well. In other words, you only need to water the orchid, when the substrate is completely dry.

Fertilizer:

During the period of new growth fertilize this hybrid for every third watering with 1/2 of the concentration of fertilizer indicated on the package. Their roots are quite sensitive to various kinds of potash, phosphorus, etc. salts contained in the fertilizer, and can deteriorate very quickly. The most sensitive place of the root is its tip, when exposed to too concentrated fertilizer, they turn black and dry out. In addition to the usual root dressing, it is also recommended to produce foliar, when the outer part of the plant is sprayed with very diluted fertilizer. It is best to feed the orchid, alternating between these two methods. The best fertilizer is fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in equal shares. If you do not have such fertilizer, then at the beginning of the growing season (the emergence of new sprouts) feed orchid fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content, and when the sprout reaches 1/2 of its normal growth, fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content.

Rest period:

In view of the natural features in the homeland of the parents of Cattleya Memoria Robert Strait, as a rule, immediately after flowering, this hybrid undergoes an easy dormancy period when this orchid is kept at a temperature of 18-20 ° C and almost does not get water and stop fertilizer completely. This period lasts 3-4 weeks. Refusal to bloom may be due to a stressful state of the plant (for example, a poor root system), the lack of sufficient reduction in nighttime temperatures, or insufficient lighting.
