It is a medium sized epiphyte (20 to 25 cm) with spiky appearance that has numerous, triangular, coriaceous leaves in a slightly water tight rosette. Brownish sheaths in the continuity of the limb which is light green and whose base is fleshy. The rigidity of the leaves and their shape make them almost pungent, which is a good way to recognize this species.
This air plant bloom from the shorter than leaves ( less than 10 cm), single or digitized (up to 4 ears) inflorescence with many flowers. The bracts of the flowering stem are similar to the leaves but with brown scales and well marked and thickened edges. The primary bracts are similar to the bracts of the flowering stem. The floral bracts are greenish (with red or yellow hues) and do not carry scales. The non-fragrant flowers are almost sessile, tubular, 5 cm long, pink / mauve. The stamens and the pistil are exserts.
