Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory is an orchid hybrid, whose parents are the hybrid Phalaenopsis Deventeriana and the natural species Phalaenopsis violacea. Officially, this orchid was registered in 1982.
IDENTIFY PHALAENOPSIS SWEET MEMORY ORCHID HYBRID
It is a hybrid of the genus Phalaenopsis with light green, sometimes slightly yellowish in color leaves, they can be oval or elongated in shape, up to 25 cm in length and 10-12 cm in width.
Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory blooms from up to 45-50 cm peduncles. This hybrid refers to the "revolver" type of flowering, i.e. flowers are blossomed in small batches, maximum 5 pieces per flower stem, after the first batch of flowers, the flower spoon slightly lengthens and more flowers are formed.
The flowers are fragrant (the smell is very strong, sweet), the color in the base is yellow with a transition to pink and up to a purple hue, sometimes densely strewn with red dots, about 7 cm in diameter. Color and size of flowers directly depend on the general conditions of the plant. Petals and sepals are oval in shape, they reach up to 4 cm in length and up to 2.3 cm in width. The lip is triple, about 2 cm long and 1.4 cm wide, its lateral parts are straight, long , yellow at the base and purple on the tips, and the front part of the lip in its shape resembles a rhombus, an intense violet color.
PHALAENOPSIS SWEET MEMORY ORCHID HYBRID CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory can be grow in both bright scattered light and in partial shade. The ideal location is considered to be the south-east orientation, but if there are not any, then you can use the western or southern windows. If the western or southern windows were chosen for the location of the plant, then during the period from May to early September, the orchid should be protected from the influence of too bright day and evening sun - put behind a curtain (for example, on a table near a window) or into the shade of other plants.
Temperature:
This hybrid belongs to a warm temperature regime, and it is recommended to keep the orchids under the following conditions throughout the year: Day temperature at 24-30 ° C, Night temperature at 18-20 ° C. For the successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always 4 ° C lower than the daytime temperature.
Humidity:
This orchid hybrid need the humidity level of 50-70%. Too dry air adversely affects the development of orchids and its growth is inhibited, and still unopened buds turn yellow and die, and the air roots are also actively drying up.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory can be grow in plastic and clay pots, and placed on blocks. As a substrate, the mixture of the bark of coniferous trees and moss sphagnum in a proportion of 4: 1 is best. When growing orchids on blocks to prevent rapid drying of the root system of the plant, it is recommended to make a small interlayer of moss between it and the block. Above the roots, you can also put live or dry sphagnum.
From frequent irrigation and fertilizer, the substrate quickly decays and loses its main useful property for orchids - air permeability, therefore it is recommended to replant at least every 2-3 years. The best time for this is considered the period immediately after flowering.
Watering:
Watering this hybrid directly depends on the total temperature of the content, the higher it is, the more often and abundant it is necessary to water. Plants growing on blocks should be watered daily in the morning, so that by evening the roots of the orchids could dry out relatively well. When watering orchids in pots, it is necessary to remember that excess water during watering should flow freely out of the pot, as the stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pallet can very quickly lead to rotting of the roots and the lower part of the plant. Within an hour after watering, it is necessary to remove the water that has accumulated in the core of the plant, using for this purpose paper handkerchiefs or napkins, since the prolonged occurrence of water in this place leads to decay. The substrate between waterings should dry well.
On hot summer days, daily spraying of the outer part of the plant is recommended, which will additionally increase the humidity of the air around the orchid and help it better survive the heat. Spray the plant only in the first half of the day, so that by evening the orchid could dry out relatively well.
Fertilizer:
During the whole year, this hybrid is fertilized for every third watering in 1/2 or 1/3 of the fertilizer concentration indicated on the package. In addition to the usual root top dressing, it is also recommended to produce a foliar dressing, when a very much diluted fertilizer is sprayed on the outer part of the plant. It is best to feed the orchid, alternating both these methods. The best fertilizer is fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in equal parts, for example, NPK = 3-3-3 or 8-8-8. If you do not have such a fertilizer, then at the beginning of the growing season (the appearance of new leaves), feed the orchid with a fertilizer with a high nitrogen content, and when the leaves grow less, they will be fertilized with a higher content of phosphorus.
Rest period:
Phalaenopsis Sweet Memory does not need a period of rest to stimulate flowering. Very often it happens that the orchid at one time produces 3 or more peduncles, but it has enough strength to develop only one. After flowering of the first peduncle, you will cut it off, and the rest will continue their development further. Such behavior of the orchid is a visiting card, that it needs to be fed more often with a fertilizer with a high content of phosphorus, rather than nitrogen. Young leaves of this hybrid are very soft and tender and can break near their base to avoid this, during the growth of the core, it is recommended to touch the plant as little as possible, and it is best to initially plant the plant so that it does not grow upwards (as it usually happens in hybrids), but as if "lying" on its side in the direction of growth or slightly hanging from the pot.
Thank you.
