Podangis dactyloceras comes from Africa, where it is found in the evergreen forests (almost always near the water sources) of Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Angola, Nigeria, Guinea and Ivory Coast. It grows at an altitude of 750-1950 meters.

Podangis dactyloceras care and culture

It is a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte and occasional lithophyte with a short stem enveloped completely by conduplicate leaf bases carrying 4 to 8 distichous, falcate, bilaterally compressed, acute, fleshy leaves.

The Finger-Like Bent Spur Podangis blooms on a axillary, 5 cm long, 5 to 20 flowered, sub-umbellate inflorescence that are shorter than the leaves with simultaneously opening, long-lasting flowers all occurring in the spring through fall. The white, almost transparent flowers measure about 5 mm wide and last a really long time and is a very nice contrast to the green leaves.

PODANGIS DACTYLOCERAS CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Podangis dactyloceras grows well below average lighting levels, requiring 13000-15000 lux. The intensity of the light must be constant throughout the year.

Temperature:

It is a warm / intermediate-hot greenhouse species, and thrives with temperatures of 23-26 ° C during the day and 18-20 ° C at night throughout the year. To promote growth and flowering, we must guarantee daily changes of 4 ° C between day and night temperatures.

Humidity:

When The Finger-Like Bent Spur Podangis is grown bare-root, the humidity must be maintained at 70-80%. If it is placed in a vase, the average levels are enough: 50-60%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Since the roots of Podangis dactyloceras like a lot of air and have to dry completely between watering, it is advisable to grow it with a bare root, mounting it on cork. It is also possible to grow it in a transparent vase, choosing the medium-large bark (3-5 cm) as the substrate. As a position, a window facing east, south-east or south is best.

Watering:

This species is one of the few that needs to remain completely dry for a while (let's say for 1 day in hot periods and for 2 days when temperatures are lower) between one watering and the other. So we wait until the substrate becomes completely dry, leave it again for 1 day, and then water it. The watering must be abundant, and the air humidity during the "dry" days must not fall below 60%.

Fertilizer:

The cultivated plant is fertilized every 4 watering. To fertilize it, we use a special fertilizer for orchids, 1/3 of the dose indicated on the bottle. We add the fertilizer to warm water in a container, and then we dip the pot. It must remain there for about 10-15 minutes, after which we remove it and put it back in its position. Let's remember that before fertilizing the plant you have to water it, because the fertilizer could burn the sensitive tips of the dry roots.

Rest period:

Podangis dactyloceras does not need a rest period: its blooms are only stimulated by sudden changes in temperature between day and night.
