Pescatoria coronaria also called as The Wreath-Shaped Pescatoria, Zygopetalum coronarium, is a species of the genus Pescatoria. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1876.
IDENTIFY PESCATORIA CORONARIA
Pescatoria coronaria is found only in the Chocó department in Colombia. Its natural habitat is the mid-mountain woods, where it grows on moss-covered trees at an altitude of 1300-1850 meters.
It is a medium sized, cool growing epiphyte, which does not possess the pseudobulbs, but have the rosettes of leaves that reach 30 cm in length.
The Wreath-Shaped Pescatoria blooms in the spring on a axillary, short, single flowered inflorescence with the fragrant flower set low in the leaves. The flowers are up to 8 cm in diameter.
PESCATORIA CORONARIA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Pescatoria coronaria needs a light level of 18000-30000 lux, with the photoperiod of 12-13 hours. The direct sun must be shielded.
Temperature:
The ideal temperatures are 21-23 ° C during the day and 14-15 ° C at night. If the night temperatures are higher, the orchid slows its growth very much.
Humidity:
The Wreath-Shaped Pescatoria needs the average humidity of 75-85% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Pescatoria coronaria can be cultivated in more ways; both in pots and on rafts. However its root system is very noticeable, so I would recommend the vase. As a substrate I had the best results with pure medium-small bark (2-3 cm), with a layer of sphagnum above if the orchid is not kept in the orchid. The base of the rosettes must never be immersed in the substrate but must be placed on top, otherwise there is a high risk of rot. It is not a species to be placed outdoors, because it requires very high levels of air humidity.
Watering:
This orchid get water regularly and abundantly; the roots must never remain completely dry. But it is also true that the substrate should not be soaked with water, otherwise the roots immediately take the rot.
Fertilizer:
The plant is fertilized every 3-4 waterings with 1/4 of the dose indicated on the bottle of a special liquid fertilizer for orchids. Before fertilizing the orchid it is necessary to water it to avoid the harmful contact of the fertilizer with the dry roots.
Rest period:
In nature the climate of the places of its origin is quite stable all year round, only with a small temperature drop (3-4 ° C) and a little less rainfall in winter. In cultivation it is better to keep the same conditions throughout the year.
