Pescatoria dayana also called as Days Pescatoria, Zygopetalum dayanum, is a species of the genus Pescatoria. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1872.
IDENTIFY PESCATORIA DAYANA
Pescatoria dayana has two varieties growing in different climatic areas. Var. rhodacra comes from the Darien area of Panama, where it grows at 853 m, and var. Candidula grows to the east of Narino in Colombia at an altitude of 1310 m.
It is a medium to large sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with suberect, oblong-oblanceolate, acuminate, petiolate, plicate, usually 25-31 cm long, but can reach as much as 61 cm long leaves.
Days Pescatoria blooms in the winter on an axillary, short to 11 cm long, single flowered inflorescence with 2 short sheaths and a lanceolate, acute floral bract carrying a very fragrant, long-lasting, waxy flower set low within the leaves. The flowers are 8-9 cm in diameter. The concave flakes of both whorls are milky white and widened at the tips. They may have a green color in the case of var. Candidula or purple-pink in the case of var. rhodacra. The lip may be white or have various shades of purple and purple, it has strong purple streaks radiating from an exceptionally large thickening in color from red to purple.
