Masdevallia pinocchio also called as The Pinocchio Masdevallia, Alaticaulia pinocchio, is a species of the genus Masdevallia. This species was described by Luer & Andreetta in 1978. It is named after Pinocchio, the famed, long-nosed, wooden puppet of the children’s story by Carlo Collodi (né Lorenzini), and the epithet refers to the tall, pointed dorsal sepal of this species.
IDENTIFY MASDEVALLIA PINOCCHIO
Masdevallia pinocchio is endemic to Ecuador, where it grows in fresh and humid mountain forests at an altitude of 1300-1500 meters. It was originally collected in 1976 by Father Andreetta and Alexander Hirtz
It is a miniature sized, cool to warm growing epiphyte with stout, erect, ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3 loose, tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, thickly coriaceous, elliptical, subacute leaf that has the base cuneate below into the channeled petiole.
The Pinocchio Masdevallia blooms in the late spring on a congested, erect, triquetrous, to 30 cm long, successively several flowered, racemose inflorescence arising from the base of the ramicaul with a tubular, basal bract and thin, tubular, imbricating floral bracts and an interesting flower held well above the leaf that has a moveable labellum. The flowers are 2 cm in diameter and truly resemble the Pinocchio head. The unique, relatively large, (5 cm) yellow, flat flower with a reddish overlay is distinguished by the horizontally balanced, oscillating, very dark lip.
MASDEVALLIA PINOCCHIO CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Masdevallia pinocchio needs a light level of 10000-12000 lux. The minimum photoperiod is 10 hours.
Temperature:
This orchid grow well under intermediate temperatures, also adapt to intermediate-hot conditions. However, the ideal temperatures are 18-24 ° C during the day and 14-16 ° C at night, with nighttime changes of 4-5 ° C between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
Humidity:
If grown in pots in the sphagnum, the problem of air humidity does not exist: it adapts well even to 50%. If it is grown bare-root, it needs 80-85%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
It is recommended to grow Masdevallia pinocchio in a vase, choosing only the sphagnum as a substratum, because this species loves a lot of moisture that the bark can not give it. It is also possible to grow it bare-root, always putting a layer of sphagnum between its roots and the raft.
Watering:
This species gets water as soon as the substrate has dried well but is not yet completely dry. We remind you that the Masdevallia love the damp a lot, and therefore one must always be careful and never let the substratum become dry.
Fertilizer:
It is fertilized every fourth watering with a liquid fertilizer for orchids. You must use 1/4 of the dose indicated on the bottle.
Rest period:
The Pinocchio Masdevallia does not need a rest to flourish: it is only stimulated by the daily changes in temperature between day and night.
