Masdevallia molossoides also called as The Molossus-Like Masdevallia, Buccella molossoides, Masdevallia anura, Masdevallia rhopalura, is a species of the genus Masdevallia. This species was described by Friedrich Fritz Wilhelm Ludwig Kraenzlin in 1921.
IDENTIFY MASDEVALLIA MOLOSSOIDES
Masdevallia molossoides is native to Costa Rica and Panama. It is a mountain species, growing on trees at an altitude of 1200-2500 meters.
It is a mini-miniature sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte with erect, slender ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical, subacute to obtuse, narrowly cuneate below into the petiolate base, 4 cm long leaf.
The Molossus-Like Masdevallia blooms at any time of the year on an erect, slender, 3 to 4.5 cm long, single flowered inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul with a bract near the base and a tubular floral bract. The flowers are about 1.2 cm in diameter.
MASDEVALLIA MOLOSSOIDES CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Masdevallia molossoides needs a light level of 9000-15000 lux. The ideal photoperiod is 12 hours.
Temperature:
It is an intermediate-cold thermal requirements species; its ideal temperatures are 19-22 ° C during the day and 10-12 ° C at night. However it can adapt to some degree further.
Humidity:
The Molossus-Like Masdevallia needs the humidity of at least 85% for bare-root plants, while for potted specimens 65% are also good.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Masdevallia molossoides can be grown both in pots and in bare root. In the last case, however, it is essential to keep the air humidity very high: 85%. Also, put some sphagnum above and below the roots of the plant. If you choose the cultivation in pot, we use the sphagnum together with the perlite (in the proportion 3: 2) as a substrate. I always recommend using transparent vases: they allow you to easily see the conditions of the substrate and the roots of the orchid.
Watering:
This orchid gets water regularly throughout the year. In the wild, the rains are scarce in winter, but the water is still available in the form of fog and dew, so the plants must never grow completely dry. It is a good practice to keep the substrate always uniformly wet throughout the year.
Fertilizer:
This species should be fertilized every 4 weeks using 1/4 of the dose indicated on the bottle of an appropriate orchid liquid fertilizer. Before fertilizing the plant it is necessary to water it to avoid the harmful contact of the manure with the dry roots. In winter this species is fertilized once every 6 weeks.
Rest period:
Masdevallia molossoides does not have a rest period, so the growing conditions are stable throughout the year.
