Dendrochilum cobbianum also called as Cobb's Dendrochilum, Acoridium cobbianum, Dendrobium cobbianum, Platyclinis cobbiana, is a species of the genus Dendrochilum. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1880.
IDENTIFY DENDROCHILUM COBBIANUM
Dendrochilum cobbianum is endemic to the Philippines (the islands of Luzon and Mindanao). In nature it is found on the trunks of trees, covered with moss, or occasionally on the rocks, almost always exposed to the sun, at an altitude of 1300 - 2500 meters.
It is a epiphytic, small sized, warm growing species with clustered, narrowly conical, yellowish pseudobulbs carrying, a single, apical, oblong-lanceolate, acute, petiolate leaf with a prominent mid rib.
Cobb's Dendrochilum blooms in the fall with a sharply pendant, 50 cm long, ovate bracteate inflorescence with ovate, subacute, glumaceous bracts and many fragrant flowers. The flowers are white to green-white, creamy with yellow throats emerge alongside new growth. This flowers have a diameter of 1.8 cm, rather large for this genus. They are fragrant with the scent of new mown hay.
DENDROCHILUM COBBIANUM CARE AND CULTURE

Dendrochilum cobbianum is a very fast growing species: in a year it can double in size. For this reason its cultivation on a raft is not very practical, and the placement in pot is chosen, using the medium-large pine bark (3-4 cm) as substrate. The roots of this species are very in need of access to air, so sphagnum-based substrates are to be avoided. In the period when night temperatures exceed 18 ° C, you can place this orchid outdoors, choosing a very bright place, protected from direct sunlight and rains.
Watering:
Throughout the year (except for the small two-weeks rest that takes place after flowering) it is water abundantly and frequently. The substrate must never become completely dry.
Fertilizer:
This orchid plant is fertilized every 3 watering with 1/2 of the dose indicated on the vial of a suitable liquid fertilizer for orchids. Before fertilizing the plant, water it to avoid any burns due to the contact of the fertilizer with the dry roots.
Rest period:
The preferred period for flowering is from October to March, but flowering is also possible during the spring months. After flower, Dendrochilum cobbianum needs 2 weeks rest. In this period, water and fertilizer should be reduced or completely eliminated when new growth appears.
