IDENTIFY CHONDROSCAPHE AMABILIS

Chondroscaphe amabilis is found in Colombia and Peru. Its natural habitat is the dense mountain forests, where it grows on moss-covered trees. It is mainly found at an altitude of 1200-1500 meters.

Chondroscaphe amabilis care and culture

It is a small sized, fan-shaped, cool growing epiphyte with oblanceolate-ligulate, obtuse, up to 25 cm long and 2.5 cm wide leaves that are basally articulate to the stem.

The Enchanting Chondroscaphe blooms on a 9 to 13 cm long, single flowered inflorescence and holds the flower at mid-leaf. The flower is fragrant, in the main color green (rather even apple) or pale yellow with brown spots on the lip, about 6-7 cm in diameter, is not fully disclosed. Upper sepals lanceolate, pointed at the tip, about 2 cm in length and 1 cm in width. Lateral sepals curved, pointed at tip, about 4 cm long and 0.7 cm wide. Petals up to the middle grow almost parallel to the column, and then bend to the sides, about 2 cm in length and about 1.3 cm in width, there is a light fringe on the tips. The lip is in the form of a violin, on the tip is bifurcated and densely covered with a long fringe, about 4 cm in length and 2 cm in width, in the middle there is a small growth and brown spots. Column in the form of a spout, slightly arched, about 1.5-1.7 cm long.

CHONDROSCAPHE AMABILIS CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Chondroscaphe amabilis needs a light level of 12000 - 16000 lux. The intensity of the light must be medium / medium-low, always diffused, and the direct sun must be well shielded. The photoperiod must be 12 hours, even in winter.

Temperature:

The ideal temperatures are 24-27 ° C (up to 28-29 ° C) during the day and 18 ° C at night. In the conditions of a simple window sill in our home, where humidity reaches a maximum of 60%, the degrees must never exceed 25 ° C. At night it's okay at 16-18 ° C.

Humidity:

The Enchanting Chondroscaphe needs the average humidity of 70%; if it is lower, the temperatures must also be lower.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

In nature Chondroscaphe amabilis has all its roots immersed in the moss that grows abundantly on the trunks of the trees, so it has them always wet. Cultivating it, we must guarantee the use of the substrate that retains humidity, therefore the best choice is the mixture of coarse fiber sphagnum (2 parts) and perlite (1 part). As a type of vase you can use both the normal transparent vases and the baskets. During the repotting it is necessary to verify that there are no roots discovered by the moss, because in nature the plant tends not to have the aerial roots.

Watering:

Regular watering is very important if we want to grow it successfully. Its roots must never be dry, so the orchid gets wet as soon as the substratum has dried up enough but before it becomes almost dry or dry. In winter conditions must not change, as this species has no rest period.

Fertilizer:

This species is fertilized every 4 watering with 1/5 of the dose written on the vial of a liquid fertilizer suitable for orchids is used. Remember that it is necessary to water the orchid before fertilizing it, because the contact of the fertilizer with the dry roots is not beneficial for the health of the root system.

Rest period:

Chondroscaphe amabilis does not have a winter rest period. In winter, the amount of water can somewhat reduced if the plant do not show active growth, fertilizer should stopped until strong waterings resumes.
