Bifrenaria inodora also called as The Odorless Bifrenaria, Bifrenaria aurantiaca, Bifrenaria fragrans, Bifrenaria fuerstenbergiana, Lycaste inodora, Stenocoryne inodora, is a species of the genus Bifrenaria. This species was described by John Lindley in 1843.
IDENTIFY BIFRENERIA INODORA ORCHID PLANT
Bifrenaria inodora is found in Brazil, where it grows epiphyte in the southern states of Espirito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul in montane rainforests at a height of 50 to 1000 meters above sea level.
It is a medium sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte with 4 angled pseudobulbs carrying a single, tough, dark green, plicate leaf.
The Odorless Bifrenaria blooms in the late spring through summer on a short to 7.5 cm, basal, racemose, semi-erect inflorescence with up to 2 heavy, waxy, fragrant or not, long-lasting flowers. The flowers are about 7.5 cm in diameter.
BIFRENERIA INODORA ORCHID PLANT CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Bifrenaria inodora loves bright sunlight and is able to tolerate the direct morning and evening sun. However, in the hot summer noon this orchid must be protected from direct sunlight: put behind a curtain or into the shade of other plants. Otherwise, the orchid can get sunburn.
Temperature:
This type of orchid refers to a mixed temperature regime. Summer temperature at day is18-30 ° C, at night 13-20 ° C; Winter temperature during the day 12-20 ° C, at night 8-12 ° C. For the successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always 5 ° C lower than the daytime temperature.
Humidity:
For normal growth and development, The Odorless Bifrenaria needs the average humidity of 50-60%. Too dry air negatively affects the overall health of the plant: pseudobulbs begin to wrinkle and the leaves turn yellow.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Bifrenaria inodora can be grow in pot, baskets or placed on blocks. The substrate must be very well breathable. Best in this quality is a mixture of large pieces of bark of coniferous trees with foam plastic and a fern of Osmund type. At the bottom of the pot is recommended to lay a thick layer of drainage, so that excess water can flow freely.
Repotting is recommended only when it is really necessary, preferably not more than once for 3-4 years. The best time to transplant this type of orchid is the period, immediately after flowering.
Watering:
During the period of new growth, the plant needs frequent and abundant watering. Excess water during watering should flow freely out of the pot, as the stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pan can very quickly lead to decay of the roots and the lower part of the plant. The substrate between watering should dry relatively well.
On hot summer days, when this type of orchid is found in the open air, daily spraying of its outer part is recommended to increase the humidity around the plant. This will help the orchid to transfer the heat better.
Fertilizer:
During the new growth period, this type of orchid is fertilized every two weeks in the usual fertilizer concentration indicated on the package. In the beginning and middle of autumn, a fertilizer with high phosphorus content is recommended to stimulate flowering.
Rest period:
To stimulate flowering, Bifrenaria inodora needs a clearly defined period of rest. It begins immediately after the maturation of new pseudobulbs (usually in the late autumn), i.e. when new young shoots reach the size of the old, and is that the orchid is kept somewhat drier than usual, and does not fertilize. The temperature in this period should be no more than 20 ° C during the day, and at night 8-12 ° C. Watering should be replaced with light spraying of the substrate and this procedure should not be performed more than once in 3 weeks. However, if the pseudobulbs begin to strongly wrinkle, the frequency of spraying should be increased to 10-14 days. The main feature of this kind of orchids is that the peduncles appear on the old pseudobulbs of the last year, i.e. every pseudobulb must undergo two periods of rest: this and next year. After the appearance of peduncles, the rest period ends and the watering of the orchid resumes in the usual volume.
