IDENTIFY SYMPHYGLOSSUM SANGUINEUM
Symphyglossum sanguineum is native to Ecuador and Peru. This orchid grows on trees in humid forests on the western slopes of the Andes. In Ecuador, they were collected in the provinces of Azuay (several meetings near Cuenca), Chimborazo, El Oro, Loja, Pichincha and Tungurahua, usually at an altitude of 1500-2000 m, but they were also encountered lower, at a height of 900 m and higher, at an altitude of 2450 m In Peru, they are found near the sources of the Marañon River in the department of Cajamarca.
It is a small to medium sized, cold to warm growing, epiphytic species, which reaching a height of 30 cm, with oval-oblong, compressed, 3-7 cm long pseudobulbs carrying 2 apical, linear, acute, conduplicate below, 6.3-25,0 cm long and 0.7-2.9 cm wide leaves.
The Blood Red Symphoglossum blooms on a terminal, slender, arcuate to pendant, 120 cm long, racemose, laxly more than 100 flowered inflorescence that arises from the apex of a new growth occurring from fall through spring. The flowers are pink-purple to dark pink with white at the base of the lip. Slightly bucket-shaped flowers reaching 2.5 cm in diameter have quite fleshy, slightly parted elements.
SYMPHYGLOSSUM SANGUINEUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Symphyglossum sanguineum needs a light level of 15000 - 20000 lux.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the summer day is 25-26 ° C, and the summer night 14-15 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 11-12 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 23 ° C, and the night 12-13 ° C, giving a daily difference of 10-11 ° C.
Humidity:
The Blood Red Symphoglossum needs the average humidity throughout the year of 75%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
You can use any loose and airy substrate, or cultivation on rootstocks, provided that high humidity is ensured.
Watering:
The rainfall is small to moderate throughout the year, but in winter the conditions are slightly drier. The cultivated plants should be abundantly watered during active growth, but excellent drainage should be ensured, and the roots must dry quite quickly after watering. In late autumn, when the new increments reach maturity, the amount of water should be reduced.
Fertilizer:
During the active growth, the plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a fertilizer richer in phosphorus should be used in late summer and autumn.
Rest period:
In winter, Symphyglossum sanguineum need less water, especially those grown in the conditions of a dark, short day in winter. However, they should never dry up completely. Fertilization should be reduced until spring, when the growth of new increments starts and increases watering.
