This species was described by Robert Allen Rolfe in 1896.
IDENTIFY PHRAGMIPEDIUM SCHLIMII
Phragmipedium schlimii is native to Medellin and Ocaña in Colombia. These plants are usually found on the eastern slopes of mountains, in areas where there are continuous watercourses, often close to rivers, at heights of 1463-1890 m.
It is a medium sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial or lithophyte, which reaching 30-51 cm in height, with a very short stem carrying 8, linear-lanceolate, suberect, rigid, acute to acuminate, 23-33 cm long leaves.
Schlimm's Phragmipedium blooms on a 30 cm long, erect, pubescent, pale greenish purple, branching, 6 to 10 flowered inflorescence with ovate floral bracts and small, fragrant flowers occurring in the fall but possible at any time of the year. The flowers are 4-8 cm in diameter, i.e. they are small considering this type. They can be white, greenish-white with discolorations or mosaics in pink or dark pink, and all elements of the flower have velvet bottoms. The ovoid lip is white with purple spots and veins. The inner whorls are round and wide spread. The form from southern Colombia is said to have larger flowers.
PHRAGMIPEDIUM SCHLIMII CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Phragmipedium schlimii needs a light level of 25000-40000 lux. It is recommended that scattered light is used because it is usually cloudy in a natural habitat.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the day throughout the year is 27-29 ° C, and the night 14-16 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 11-14 ° C.
Humidity:
Schlimm's Phragmipedium needs the average humidity of 70-75% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
A substrate that is fast drying but requires a part of the moisture is necessary. Repotting is best done after flowering, when new roots begin to grow.
Watering:
Phragmipedium schlimii should be constantly moist. The precipitation pattern is wet throughout the year with a slightly drier period in winter. Evening precipitation along with strong winds often occur in wet forest areas.
Fertilizer:
In the growing season, weekly or every 2 weeks use 1/4-1/2 doses of fertilizer for orchids is recommended.
Rest period:
The given cultivation conditions should be maintained throughout the year. In winter, watering and fertilization for Phragmipedium schlimii should be slightly reduced while the light level should be higher; fluctuations of these factors in the natural habitat are, however, small and probably irrelevant to cultivation.
