This species was described by Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer in 1888.

Paphiopedilum venustum care and culture

It is a medium sized, cool growing, shade loving terrestrial with narrowly elliptic, mottled bluish and lighter green, purple beneath, 10-25 cm long, 3-6 cm wide leaves.

The Charming Paphiopedilum blooms in the late winter and spring on an erect, terminal, 12 cm long, deep purple, pubescent, single flowered inflorescence with a elliptic-lanceolate floral bract. The size of the flowers is about 7.5 cm in diameter. The color and shape of the flowers vary greatly depending on the place of growth. There are about 8 varieties of color. The main color of the petal and lip is green-yellow with pink endings. Petals have hairs and are covered with dark brown spots. Upper sepals is white-green.

PAPHIOPEDILUM VENUSTUM CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Paphiopedilum venustum needs a light level of 10000-15000 lux. The leaves should be a medium-green color, if they are too pale or yellowish, the plant could be getting too much light.

Temperature:

It is a plant with moderate thermal requirements. The average day temperatures is 20-25 ° C, average night temperatures 13-14 ° C. It is necessary that the night temperature is always 4 ° C lower than the daytime temperature.

Humidity:

The Charming Paphiopedilum needs the average humidity of 50-70%. However, at a temperature of more than 25 ° C, air humidity should be raised to at least 70%, since too much dry air affects the roots and leaves of the plant.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Paphiopedilum venustum can be grown in pots. As a substrate, the pieces of bark of coniferous trees or a mixture of bark with moss-sphagnum are best. One of the key moments of the well-being of the plant is the correct pH-substrate ratio, for which it is necessary to add calcium (lime), for example, in the form of a crushed egg shell or shells. For normal functioning of the roots, the substrate pH should be between 5 and 6.5. At a lower or higher rate, the orchid roots will not be able to absorb the iron needed by the plant to maintain the green color of the leaves.

These plants should be exposed as little as possible to violations, but since they do not tolerate excessively acidified soil around the roots, they must be replanted as soon as the substrate begins to decompose. If repotting is necessary, it is best to do it immediately after flowering.

Watering:

Throughout the year, this species needs frequent and abundant watering. Excess water during watering should flow freely out of the pot, as the stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pan can very quickly lead to decay of the roots and the lower part of the plant. The substrate between watering should dry well. After watering, the water from the leaves of the orchid must be removed using paper handkerchiefs or napkins. This especially applies to the core of the plant, since it can very quickly rot away from the stagnation of water in this place.

Fertilizer:

This plant needs to weekly feed 1/10-1/4 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. In the period of active growth, a fertilizer with a high nitrogen content should be used, and in the middle of summer switch to a fertilizer with high phosphorus content to improve flowering and strengthen young growths before winter.

Rest period:

Paphiopedilum venustum does not need a period of rest. However, if you have problems with the flowering of this kind of orchids, try between November and December to hold the orchid somewhat colder and drier than usual, but never let the plant stay dry for a long time. If we limit watering, fertilization should also be limited or even stopped.
