IDENTIFY MEXICOA GHIESBREGHTIANA
Mexicoa ghiesbreghtiana is native to Mexico. These plants grow as epiphytes in oak and oak-spruce forests, on the mountain slopes towards the Pacific, in the southwestern states of Guerrero, México, Michoacán and Oaxaca. Relatively recently, they were also discovered in southwestern Jalisco. They usually grow at heights of 1800-2300 m, but one plant was encountered further north in Jalisco, where it grew at an altitude of only 1,400 m.
It is a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphytic or lithophytic species, which reaching a height of 19 cm, with ovoid, conical or pyriform, grooved, 4 cm long pseudobulbs with 2 apical, linear or linear-lanceolate, acute, 8-15 cm long and 1.5 cm wide leaves.
Gheisbreght's Mexicoa blooms in the spring through fall on a laxly 3 to 6 flowered, simple, erect to arcuate, 14 cm long inflorescence that is subtended by several sheathing bracts and arises on a newly forming pseudobulb. The flowers are about 2 cm in diameter and 3-4 cm long, and the yellowish petals of the outer whorls are covered with reddish or brown stripes. The lip is bright yellow.
MEXICOA GHIESBREGHTIANA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Mexicoa ghiesbreghtiana needs a light level of 18000-25000 lux. The light should be slightly filtered or dispersed, and the plants should not be exposed to the midday sun. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the summer day is 24-26 ° C, and the summer night is 13-15 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 11 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is 26-28 ° C, night 11-13 ° C, and the daily difference is 14-16 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 24-25 ° C, and the night 8-9 ° C, giving a daily difference of 16 ° C. The plants will feel good growing near the outlet of a strong stream of cool, humid air from the humidifier.
Humidity:
Gheisbreght's Mexicoa needs the average humidity of 75-80% for most of the year, while in winter and at the beginning of spring it drops to 60-65%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Mexicoa ghiesbreghtiana grow best when they are firmly attached to a cork or tree fern rootstock. Then, however, it is necessary to maintain high humidity and water the plants at least once a day in summer. During extremely hot and dry weather, it may be necessary to water several times a day.
These plants can also be grown in pots or baskets filled with any loose, fast-drying substrate, so that the roots dry quickly after watering. Repotting or dividing should only be done when the growth of new roots begins. This allows the plants to stabilize in the shortest possible time.
Watering:
Precipitation is slight to moderate in the 4-5 month period of the rainy season, which lasts from late spring to autumn. Then their number decreases rapidly and in the autumn begins the 6-month dry season. The cultivated plants should often be watered during active growth, but their roots must dry out between watering. In autumn, when new growths reach maturity and flower shoots appear, the amount of water should be drastically reduced.
Fertilizer:
During the growing season, 1/4-1/2 doses of balanced fertilizer for orchids should be used weekly. You can use a fertilizer with a lower nitrogen content and higher phosphorus from mid summer to autumn, to help better flowering in the next season and allow new growths to strengthen before winter.
To protect against salt deposition during the period of high fertilization, the substrate should be washed every month. This is especially important where the available water is highly mineralized. Washing is done by watering the plant normally, so that the accumulated salts dissolve, and then after about an hour the medium is poured with the amount of water twice the volume of the pot.
Rest period:
In winter, Mexicoa ghiesbreghtiana should be occasionally fogged between a few, light watering. However, if the leaves and the pseudobulbs start to wrinkle, you need to increase the amount of water. Fertilization should be eliminated until spring, when new growths begin to appear and normal watering begins.
