Gomesa radicans is native to Brazil. This species was first collected near Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, but now it is also known to be near the coast in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. Near Rio de Janeiro they were encountered at an altitude of 400 m.

It is a miniature sized, warm to hot growing epiphyte, which reaching up to 23 cm in height, with thin, narrow, oblong-ligulate, compressed, ancipitous, reach up to 5 cm in height pseudobulbs subtended basally by several, distichous, leaf-bearing sheaths and carrying 2 apical, grass-like, cuneate, linear-ligulate, acute, membraneous, up to 18 cm long leaves.

The Ground Rooting Gomesa blooms in the summer and fall on an arching, slender, 18 cm long, loosely several flowered inflorescence carrying tiny fragrant flowers. The small flowers are 0.6-1.0 cm long from the top of the dorsal petal to the edge of the lip. The flakes of both whorls are white to lemon-green. The lip is white with a large yellow or orange thickening. The spine is dark purple-purple.

GOMESA RADICANS CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Gomesa radicans needs a light level of 15000-23000 lux. The light should be filtered and dispersed, and the plants should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Air movement should be ensured all the time.

Temperature:

The average temperature of the summer day is 29-31 ° C, the night 18-20 ° C, and the daily difference is 11-12 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 19-20 ° C, the night 9-10 ° C, and the daily difference is 10 ° C.

Humidity:

In autumn and winter, The Ground Rooting Gomesa needs the humidity of 75-80%, but in spring and summer it drops to 65-70%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Due to the growing way of growth, Gomesa radicans are extremely well suited for mounting on cork or tree fern washers. In this case, however, it is necessary to ensure high humidity and spraying at least once a day during the summer. In the case of exceptionally dry and warm weather, it may be necessary to spray several times a day.

These plants also grow well in flat pots or baskets with excellent drainage. The substrate should be very loose and must allow quick root drying after watering. The substrate around the roots can never be desiccated or soggy, so they should be repotted before it begins to decompose. The plants are best divided or repotted when new roots begin to grow, because it allows plants to stabilize as quickly as possible with little stress.

Watering:

Precipitation is moderate to heavy throughout the year. The cultivated plants should often be watered during active growth, but excellent drainage should be ensured.

Fertilizer:

Weekly use of 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of orchid fertilizer is recommended. You can use sustainable fertilizer throughout the year, but you can also use high-nitrogen fertilizer from spring to mid-summer, and then until the end of autumn use high-phosphoric fertilizer.

Rest period:

In winter, you can slightly reduce the amount of water, especially when Gomesa radicans grown in the conditions of a short, dark day in winter. The plants, however, can never dry up completely, and the pseudobulbs can not be excessively wrinkled. Fertilization should be reduced or eliminated until spring.
