It is a small sized, cool to hot growing epiphyte, which reaching up to 30 cm in size, that has narrowly ellipsoidal or subcylindric, compressed, 6-12 cm long and 1 cm wide pseudobulbs partially enveloped basally by several distichous, imbricating, leafless sheaths carrying 1 to 2 apical, oblong-lanceolate, narrowly elliptic or obovate, acute, up to 18 cm long and 3 cm wide leaves.

The Hedge Hog Gomesa blooms in the winter on a 45 cm long, pendulous, mottled with dull crimson, paniculate, 2 to 6 flowers per branch or racemose, densly many flowered inflorescence with papery, elliptic, obtuse floral bracts and has numerous small flowers. The white column turns bright yellow at the top and has several red spots at the base and on the wings of the spine.

GOMESA ECHINATA CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Gomesa echinata needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux. The light should be filtered or dispersed, and the plants should not be exposed to the direct sunlight of the midday sun. Ensure continuous, strong air movement.

Temperature:

It is a plant with moderate thermal requirements. The average temperature of the summer day is 24-26 ° C, the night 17-18 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 7-8 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 19 ° C, night 12 ° C, giving a daily difference of 7-8 ° C.

Humidity:

The Hedge Hog Gomesa needs the humidity of 75-80% in the growing season and 65-70% in the winter.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Gomesa echinata are best mounted on tree fern washers, but they can also be grown in hanging containers filled with very loose ground. However, mounted plants require high humidity, and during hot, dry weather, even several times a day.

They can also planted in hanging baskets or pots (clay are better) filled with very loose, airy ground. You can only use sphagnum moss or use a medium granulation cortex or chopped tree fern fiber and add pieces of perlite so that the substrate is loose, but also to retain some of the moisture. The addition of charcoal to this mixture also relaxes the substrate and prevents it from souring.

The plants should be repotted immediately if the substrate is spread or every few years if the plant grows out of the container. Repotting carried out when new roots begin to grow helps the plant to stabilize quickly in the shortest possible time.

Watering:

The cultivated plants should be abundantly watered for most of the year, but the roots should be provided with excellent drainage. When young growths reach maturity in late autumn, the amount of water should be slightly reduced.

Fertilizer:

During the active growth, the plant should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a fertilizer richer in phosphorus should be used in late summer and autumn.

Rest period:

In winter, you should limit the amount of water for Gomesa echinata, especially those that are grown in dark, short days at moderate latitudes, or at lower temperatures. The plants should not be left without water for too long and should never completely dry out. Fertilization should be reduced or eliminated until new growths appear in spring and regular watering begins.
