Dendrochilum yuccaefolium also called as The Yucca-Like Leaf Dendrochilum, is a species of the genus Dendrochilum. This species was described by Louis Otho Williams in 1937.
IDENTIFY DENDROCHILUM YUCCAEFOLIUM
Dendrochilum yuccaefolium is native to Philippines. This orchid is found on the island of Luzon in the province of Rizal, in Paningtingan near Montalban. It grows on branches and lower branches of trees at heights of around 500 m in areas with high humidity and high air traffic.
It is a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte, which reaching 40 cm in height, with single leafed, narrowly cylindric, furrowed, 3.0-7.0 cm long, 0.4-1.1 cm in diameter pseudobulbs with a stiff, linear-lanceolate, 14.2-25.5 cm long and 0.8-1.3 cm wide leaf.
The Yucca-Like Leaf Dendrochilum blooms in the winter and spring on an semi-arching, short, densely 30 flowered inflorescence arising with a new growth. The white flowers are 1.5 cm in diameter. The petals and sepals are widely spread, in the middle part there are several short hairs. Sepals are oblong, with pointed tips, three veins and smooth edges. The lateral sepals are slightly larger than the upper sepals. The petals are of the same shape, but shorter. The lip is ovate-oval, with a rounded, blunt, curved down tip, directed forward. It also has three veins along which two short ridges run.
DENDROCHILUM YUCCAEFOLIUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrochilum yuccaefolium needs a light level of 20000-35000 lux. The light should be filtered or dispersed. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.
Temperature:
The average temperature throughout the year is 30-34 ° C / 21-24 ° C, and the daily difference is 6-13 ° C.
Humidity:
For almost the entire year, The Yucca-Like Leaf Dendrochilum needs the average humidity of around 90%, and within a few months in winter and at the beginning of spring is 85%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrochilum yuccaefolium can not tolerate a soggy substrate, which is why the plant often assembled closely to tree fern rootstocks with moss pads on the roots. Then, however, it is necessary to ensure high humidity and summer watering at least once a day. During extremely warm and dry weather, it may be necessary to water several times a day.
This species grow very well when planted in tiny pots or baskets with excellent drainage. It is recommended to be composed of equal parts of sphagnum moss cuttings and chopped tree fern fibers, but you can also use a bark-based mixture. Whatever substrate is used should be very permeable so that the roots can dry quickly after watering.
This species extremely badly reacts to a solid substrate, so it should be repotted before it begins to decompose. In general, these plants do not tolerate the start of roots, so during repotting they should be handled very gently. However, if repotting or dividing is necessary, it is best done when growing new roots. This allows the plants to stabilize in the shortest possible time and with the least stress.
Watering:
In the natural habitat from spring to late autumn the rainfall is very abundant. In the period of 2-3 months in winter and at the beginning of spring, the rainfall is lower. The cultivated plants should be abundantly watered during the growing season, but must have perfect drainage, and the ground around the roots can never be soggy or stale. Outside the growing season, the amount of water should be reduced, but the plants should never dry out completely.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to use 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of orchid fertilizer weekly during the growing season. You can use of sustainable fertilizer throughout the year, also can use high-nitrogen fertilizer from spring to mid-summer, and then high phosphoric fertilizer until the end of autumn.
Rest period:
The given cultivation conditions should be maintained throughout the year. In winter, you should reduce the amount of water supplied, but Dendrochilum yuccaefolium can never dry up completely.
