Cischweinfia dasyandra also called as The Hirsute Pollina Cischweinfia, Leucohyle dasyandra, Trichopilia dasyandra, is a species of the genus Cischweinfia. This species was described by Robert Louis Dressler & Norris Hagan Williams in 1970.
IDENTIFY CISCHWEINFIA DASYANDRA
Cischweinfia dasyandra is native to Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. This orchid was found for the first time in Costa Rica, where it was very widespread on the slopes from the Atlantic. Quite often it is also found on the slopes from the Pacific, on both sides of the Panama-Costa Rica border, where it grows mainly at heights of 500-1000 m. However, it was also found at an altitude of 1650 m. In Panama, these plants are found in the ChiriquÃ, Coclé and Panama.
It is a miniature to small sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte, which reaching a height of 25-28 cm, with oblong, laterally compressed, 3-8 cm long and 0.6-1.5 cm wide pseudobulbs partially enveloped by several, distichous, imbricating, conduplicate, lower leafless and upper leaf bearing sheaths carrying a single, apical, linear, conduplicate at the base, lanceolate, 9-20 cm long and 0.7-1.5 cm wide leaf.
The Hirsute Pollina Cischweinfia blooms in the summer on a short, basal, somewhat pendulous, 4 to 7 cm long, 1 to 4 flowered, racemose inflorescence arising on a newly matured growth. The flowers are up to 2.4 cm in diameter across horizontal or slightly obliquely distributed petals of the inner whorl. The flakes of both whorls are pale green or greenish-yellow, sometimes with a pink tint, the lip is cream with more or less pale pink dots around the edges, and the throat of the lip is slightly orange-yellow or brown-yellow. In some clones, the lip may be almost completely white with a small amount of color in the throat, while in others it has a solid pink strip at the apex.
CISCHWEINFIA DASYANDRA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Temperature:
The average temperature of the summer day is 27 ° C, night 17 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 10 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is then 28-30 ° C, night 16-18 ° C with a daily difference of 11-14 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 27-29 ° C, the nights are slightly cooler than in the summer, their average temperature is 15-16 ° C, which gives a larger daily difference, 11-14 ° C.
Humidity:
The Hirsute Pollina Cischweinfia needs the humidity of 85-90% for most of the year, at the end of winter and at the beginning of spring it drops to 70%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Cischweinfia dasyandra can be attached to cork flakes or tree ferns, as long as we can provide them with high humidity and watering at least once a day during the summer. If grown in pots, it is recommended to use a very loose, permeable substrate, such as medium pieces of fir bark, cork pieces, or tree fern fiber.
Watering:
In natural habitat, rainfall is moderate to heavy for most of the year. The cultivated plants should often be watered during the growing season, but drainage must be perfect, and their roots must dry a little between watering. In late autumn or early winter, when new growths reach maturity, the amount of water should be reduced.
Fertilizer:
During the active growth, the plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a fertilizer richer in phosphorus should be used in late summer and autumn.
Rest period:
During the period of 2-3 months at the end of winter and at the beginning of spring, watering for Cischweinfia dasyandra should be reduced, but they can not excessively dry up or remain without water for a longer period. Fertilization should be reduced or eliminated until spring, when regular watering is undertaken.
