Restrepia guttulata is native to Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. In Colombia, they are found in many locations at altitudes of 1700-2800 m, in the western Andes range near Medell in the south and towards northern Ecuador, and in the eastern Andes range in the north, almost to the Venezuelan border. In Ecuador, they are meets only in the north, near Quito, usually at heights of 2300-3000 m. But they are also encountered in Mt. P. Schmichch at 4100-4500 m. In Venezuela, they were met in the state of Mérida near the Colombian border.

Restrepia guttulata care and culture

It is a small to just medium sized, cold to cool growing, which reaching 12-30 cm high, with erect, terete, 8-20 cm long ramicauls enveloped basally by several scarious bracts carrying a single, apical, coriaceous, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, subacute, 4-10 cm long and 2-5 cm wide leaf.

The Small Spotted Restrepia blooms in the spring through fall on a slender, terminal, to 7 cm long, successively single flowered inflorescence that has sheathed bracts and holds the flowers at or above the leaf. The flowers are 5.8-10.0 cm long from the top of the dorsal petal to the tips of the lateral outer petals. The flowers have a transparently white dorsal petal with a purple-brown middle nerve. The side petals can be in any shade of white, yellow, pink or light purple with various brown or dark purple veins, dots or spots. In most cases, the spots at the bases are larger than those near the vertices. The white petals of the inner whorl have veins and are more or less purple-colored. The lip may be pale green, white, yellowish, light purple and variously colored or dotted in red-brown or dark purple.

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Restrepia guttulata needs a light level of 18000-25000 lux. Moderately bright light should be filtered or scattered, and the plants can not be exposed to the direct sunlight of the midday sun. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.

Temperature:

Throughout the year the average day temperature is 24-26 ° C, the night 11-13 ° C, and the daily difference is 11-14 ° C. The plants will grow well near the outlet of the cool air from the humidifier.

Humidity:

The Small Spotted Restrepia needs the humidity of 70-75% throughout the year.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Restrepia guttulata grow well in small plastic pots filled with a well-permeable, fine substrate. It's also good to grow firmly on tree rootstocks, cork or on pieces of bark. If they are mounted on washers, a moss substrate should be placed around the roots. In addition, you should maintain high humidity, and the plants in the summer must be watered at least once a day. During hot, dry weather, it may be necessary to water several times a day.

These plants do not tolerate a solid substrate, so they should be repotted when the substrate begins to decompose, or when the plant grows out of the pot. Repotting should be done when new roots start growing, because then they will stabilize faster.

Watering:

Precipitation is moderate to heavy for most of the year, only in winter there is a period of 2-3 slightly drier months. The cultivated plants should often be watered during active growth. Although the roots should dry a little between waterings, they can never be completely dry. Care should be taken that the substrate around the roots is not soggy or spread.

Fertilizer:

It is recommended to use 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of orchid fertilizer in the growing season. You can use sustainable fertilizer throughout the year, but also can use nitrogen-enriched fertilizer from spring to mid-summer, and then phosphate-enriched fertilizer until the end of autumn.

Rest period:

In winter, the amount of water can be slightly reduced, especially when Restrepia guttulata are grown on a short, dark day at moderate latitudes. However, they should never completely dry out. If the amount of water decreases, also reduce fertilization.
