 Restrepia cuprea also called as The Copper-Colored Restrepia, is a species of the genus Restrepia. This species was described by Luer & R.Escobar in 1996.

IDENTIFY RESTREPIA CUPREA

 Restrepia cuprea is endemic to Colombia. In nature it is found in the woods in the mountains of the Central Cordillera at an altitude of 1600-1700 meters.

 It is a miniature to small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 6 to 7, thin whitish, loose, compressed, somewhat imbricating sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, often suffused with purple beneath, elliptical ovate, subacute, cuneate to rounded basally contracted into the twisted petiolate base, 4-6 cm long leaf.

 The Copper-Colored Restrepia blooms in the spring and fall on a terminal, slender, single flowered inflorescence arising on the back of the leaf and carrying a thin, tubular floral bract. The flowers reach 6 cm in length and have a beautiful shape, typical for the Restrepia.

Light:

 Restrepia cuprea needs a light level of 20000-25000 lux, otherwise the growth will be very slow and it is said that the plant will flourish. The photoperiod is 12-13 hours.

Temperature:

 It prefers the intermediate conditions. The ideal daytime temperatures are 22-25 ° C, while the nighttime temperatures must be 15-17 ° C.

Humidity:

 The Copper-Colored Restrepia loves high humidity. If it is a bare root specimen, the minimum humidity is 75%. The potted specimens grow well even with 55-60%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

 Restrepia cuprea can be placed either in pot (sphagnum + perlite as substrate), or bare root on a raft (putting a layer of sphagnum under the roots to prevent drying too quickly). In the period when night temperatures exceed 16 ° C, it is advisable to keep this species outdoors, in a light or semi-shaded position, well ventilated and protected from direct sunlight.

Watering:

 Throughout the year this orchid get water regularly, as soon as the substratum has dried well but before it becomes completely dry. The bare root specimens get water 1-3 times a day.

Fertilizer:

 This species is fertilizes every 4-5 waterings (never more often than once every 10 days), using 1/4 of the dose indicated on the bottle of a suitable liquid fertilizer for orchids. Before fertilizing the orchid, it is important to water it, to avoid the harmful contact of the manure with the dry roots.

Rest period:

 Restrepia cuprea does not have any period of rest. If the cultivation conditions are right, this orchid can bloom in any season, even all year round.
