 Dendrobium catenatum also called as The Chained Dendrobium, Callista stricklandiana, Dendrobium funiushanense, Dendrobium huoshanense, Dendrobium pere-fauriei, Dendrobium stricklandianum, Dendrobium tosaense, Dendrobium tosaense var. chingshuishanianum, Dendrobium tosaense var. pere-fauriei, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by John Lindley in 1830.

IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM CATENATUM

 Dendrobium catenatum is native to Japan, on the islands of Shikoku, Kyushu, Yakushima, Okinawa and others, Taiwan and China. In Taiwan, they occur in the eastern mountains near Hua-Lien (Hualien) at heights of 300-1200 m. They grow on branches of trees or on rocks.

 It is a small to medium sized, cool to warm growing epiphyte and also growing on rocks, which reaching 25-40 cm in height, with long, clustered, terete, pendant or erect, pale green, 25-40 cm long stems carrying to 12, ligulate-lanceolate, acute, deciduous, 2-7 cm long leaves.

 The Chained Dendrobium blooms in the mid-winter till mid-spring on a lax, 2 to 6 cm long, 4 to 5 flowered inflorescence that arises from the nodes near the apex of 2 to 3 year old leafless canes. The flowers are 3 cm in diameter. Lancet petals of both whorls are bright greenish-yellow and have slightly bent tops. The lip is slightly curved at the apex and has several purple lines or stripes below the center. The spine is light green.

Temperature:

 The average temperature of the summer day is 26-27 ° C, night 18-19 ° C, giving a daily difference of 7-8 ° C. In winter the average day temperature is 17-18 ° C, night 10-11 ° C, giving a daily difference of 7 ° C.

Humidity:

 From late winter to the end of summer, The Chained Dendrobium needs the humidity of 80-85%, but in autumn and at the beginning of winter it drops to 75%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

 Dendrobium catenatum can be grow mounted on a tree-fern rootstock or cork with high humidity ensured and summer watering at least once a day. When growing in pots, it is recommend small pots or hanging baskets filled with loose, quickly drying substrate. Repotting can be done at any time as soon as new roots grow.

Watering:

 Precipitation is moderate to heavy from spring to autumn. After the rainy season, a 5-month dry season follows, lasting throughout the winter and beginning of spring. The plants should be kept moist during active growth, but in autumn the amount of water should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

 It is recommended to apply a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. High-nitrogen fertilizer should be used from spring to mid-summer, and then until the end of autumn, high-phosphoric fertilizer.

Rest period:

 In winter, the amount of water for Dendrobium catenatum should be slightly reduced, but they can not be dry for too long. Fertilization should be reduced until spring, when more watering resumes.
