Pleurothallis sclerophylla is native to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru as well as Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Surinam and Brazil. In Brazil, this orchid is found in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Minas Gerais, it is usually found on fallen tree trunks or on thick, horizontal branches near mountainous ridges, at an altitude of about 1,400 m. In Venezuela, they were encountered in several places, at heights of 1520-2130 m.

Pleurothallis sclerophylla care and culture

It is a miniature to small sized, cold to warm growing, caespitose epiphyte with erect ramicauls carrying a single, apical, elliptic-oblong or oblanceolate, obtuse, petiolate, 7 cm long and 2 cm wide, shiny, dark green leaf.

The Dry Leathery Leaf Pleurothallis blooms in the fall on an apical, racemose, to 12" (30 cm) long, longer than the leaves, several to many flowered inflorescence with the flowers held well above the leaf and having simultaneously opening, fragrant flowers. The flowers are slightly white, they have the appearance of a triangle formed from 3 equal size, thin, narrow-triangular petals of 1.2 centimeter outer hem. The inner whorl flakes are much smaller, and the small, 3-spotted lip has rounded side plots and a short, triangular middle section with a blunt tip or rounded tip.

PLEUROTHALLIS SCLEROPHYLLA CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Pleurothallis sclerophylla needs a light level of 18000-25000 lux. The light should be filtered or dispersed, and the plants should not be exposed to the direct effects of the midday sun. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.

Temperature:

The average temperature of the summer day is 22-23 ° C, the night 13-14 ° C, and the daily difference is 9-10 ° C. If a cold humidifier is available, these plants will grow well in the vicinity of the cold, humid air outlet. The average temperature of the winter day is 18 ° C, the night 7-8 ° C, and the daily difference is 10-11 ° C.

Humidity:

The Dry Leathery Leaf Pleurothallis needs the humidity of 80-85% throughout the year.

Substrate, growing media:

Pleurothallis sclerophylla can be mounted on rootstocks of tree ferns with a small amount of sphagnum around the roots and it is necessary to ensure high humidity, and watering at least once a day in summer and several times during hot and dry weather.

They can also grown in pots or baskets filled with loose, fast-drying substrate, such as bark or chopped woody fern fiber. Perlite is also often added to the substrate, which loosens it and simultaneously retains some of the moisture. The addition of charcoal also works in a similar way, which also prevents soda of the substrate.

Repotting:

Pleurothallis sclerophylla react very badly to the movement of the root ball, so they should be repotted or divide only when absolutely necessary. On the other hand, they do not tolerate stale soil around the roots, so they must be repotted immediately when the substrate begins to decompose.

Repotting can be done when new roots begin to grow, because then the plant stabilizes faster. After dividing up to two years, it is time to return to appropriate stabilization.

Watering:

The Dry Leathery Leaf Pleurothallis should be abundantly watered during active growth from late spring until autumn, but their roots must dry quite quickly after watering, and the ground around the roots can not be soggy or damp. When new growths reach maturity in autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

It is recommended to apply a 1/4-1/2 dose of fertilizer for orchids every week during active growth. You can use a balanced fertilizer throughout the year, or use high-nitrogen fertilizer from spring to mid-summer and then high-phosphoric fertilizer until the end of autumn.

Rest period:

In winter, lasting 3-4 months until the beginning of spring, the amount of water for Pleurothallis sclerophylla should be limited, but it should not be allowed to dry too much or remain dry for too long. Occasional morning fogging between rare watering will provide the necessary dry enough, but will save the plants from too much drying. Fertilization should be reduced or eliminated until new growth occurs in the spring when more watering is resumed.
