Encyclia oncidioides also called as Oncidium-Like Encyclia, Encyclia argentinensis f. maior, Encyclia cardinii, Encyclia ensiformis, Encyclia saltensis f. maior, Encyclia vellozoana, Epidendrum ensiforme, Epidendrum guillemianum, Epidendrum oncidioides, is a species of the genus Encyclia. This species was described by Rudolf Schlechter in 1914.

IDENTIFY ENCYCLIA ONCIDIOIDES

Encyclia oncidioides is native to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Surinam, Trinidad, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. In Brazil, this orchid is found in lowland and mountain forests along the coast from Rio de Janeiro to Bahia. It usually grows at an altitude of 1000 m above sea level, on trees of the middle floor of primary forests, in areas with high humidity, diffused light and significant air movement.

Encyclia oncidioides care and culture

It is a medium to large sized, hot to warm growing, terrestrial or lithophyte, which reaching up to 20 cm in height, with clustered, conical to ovoid, 3-4 cm long and about 2.3 cm wide pseudobulbs carrying 2 to 3 strap-shaped, up to 15 cm long and 1.8 cm wide leaves.

Oncidium-Like Encyclia blooms in the spring and summer on a terminal, several to many flowered, paniculate, 3' (90 cm) long inflorescence arising from a mature pseudobulb carrying sweetly fragrant, long lasting flowers. The flowers are up to 5 cm in diameter. The petals of both whorls are brownish-yellowish-green. The raid has yellow side plots and a white middle plot with 8-10 small red stripes at the tip's edge.

ENCYCLIA ONCIDIOIDES CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Encyclia oncidioides needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux. The light should be filtered or dispersed, and the plants should not be exposed to the direct sunlight of the midday sun. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.

Temperature:

 The average temperature of the summer day is 24-26 ° C, the night 15-16 ° C, giving a daily difference of 9-10 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 20-21 ° C, the night 9-11 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 10-11 ° C.

Humidity:

Oncidium-Like Encyclia needs the average humidity of 80-85% throughout the year.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Encyclia oncidioides can be grown in shallow containers with perfect drainage or mounted on tree fern washers. However, the mounted plants need high humidity, and during hot and dry weather, it may be necessary to water several times a day. If it is difficult to keep the installed plants in a sufficiently high humidity, they can be grown in shallow pots or baskets filled with a very loose, airy substrate that dries quickly after watering. Use small containers that are sufficient to hold the roots and allow them to grow for 2 years. You can use a medium granulation cortex or chopped tree fern fiber with the addition of different amounts of pearlite and / or chopped sphagnum, which make the substrate loose but retain some of the moisture. The addition of charcoal also improves the airiness of the substrate and prevents soda.

The plants should be repotted immediately when the substrate begins to decompose, or when the plant grows out of the pot. Repotting should be carried out when new roots begin to grow. Then the plants will stabilize in the shortest possible time.

Watering:

Encyclia oncidioides should be abundantly watered during active growth, but their roots must dry fast after watering. At the end of autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

During the growing season, it is recommended to use 1/4-1/2 dose of fertilizer for orchids. You can use a balanced fertilizer throughout the year, or use high nitrogen fertilizer from spring to mid summer and then high phosphorus fertilizer until autumn.

Rest period:

In winter, Encyclia oncidioides need less water, especially those grown in the conditions of a short, dark day at moderate latitudes. However, they should never completely dry out. Fertilization should be reduced or eliminated until more watering is undertaken in the spring.
