IDENTIFY ENCYCLIA CORDIGERA

Encyclia cordigera is native to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia and Peru. Theses orchid are common in rather dry, dwarfish forests of coastal regions from sea level to 900 m above sea level on both sides of the mountains sharing the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. In Central America, they are more common from the Pacific coast.

Encyclia cordigera care and culture

It is a is medium sized, bifoliate, hot to warm growing epiphyte, but can occasionally be lithophytic, which reaching 30-60 cm in height, with ovoid-pyriform, to subglobose, 3-11 cm tall pseudobulbs, subtended by a scarious sheaths in youth, sulcate with age and carrying 2 oblong-elliptic, obtuse, coriaceous, narrowing below into an elongate, narrow, 15-47 cm long, petiole-like base leaves.

Large-lipped Encyclia blooms in the winter and spring on an apical, to 2' (60 cm) long, few to many flowered, racemose inflorescence with a short, basal bract and strongly fragrant, heavily textured flowers. The flowers are 5-8 cm long, they are durable and all open almost simultaneously. They smell strongly if they are grown in direct sunlight. However, the smell rapidly disappears if the flowers are in the shade, even caused by a brief cloud cover. The flakes are green, to a large extent covered with brown or purple-brown. The lip may be white or crimson. Plants from South America and Costa Rica usually produce flowers with a white lip, which is covered with small crimson spots or streaks in the center of the central petal, while the plant flowers from Panama and Mexico normally have a whole cave colored in crimson.

ENCYCLIA CORDIGERA CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Encyclia cordigera needs a light level of 25000-35000 lux.

Temperature:

It is a thermophilic plant. In summer, the average day temperature is 25-31 ° C, and the night 18-19 ° C, with a daily amplitude of 12-13 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is then 29-33 ° C, and the average night temperature is 17-19 ° C, with a daily amplitude of 13-18 ° C. In winter the average daytime temperatures are 32-33 ° C, and 16-17 ° C during the night, while the daily amplitude is 16-18 ° C.

Humidity:

Encyclia cordigera needs the humidity of 80% in the period of growth, in winter and spring it falls to 60-65%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Encyclia cordigera can be attached to cork flakes or tree ferns, as long as we can provide them with high humidity and watering at least once a day during the summer. If grow in pots, it is recommend to use airy, quickly drying substrate like cork nuggets or coarse pieces of pine bark.

Repotting should be performed when new roots start growing or immediately after flowering.

Watering:

In the growing season, the precipitation is moderate to strong. These plants should lightly dry before the next watering.

Fertilizer:

Encyclia cordigera should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a phosphorus-rich fertilizer can be used in late summer and autumn. Higher phosphorus content stimulates better flowering in the next season and promotes hardening of new growth before winter.

To avoid the accumulation of mineral deposits during periods of strong fertilization, it is recommended to rinse the containers approximately every month.

Rest period:

In winter, you can not refrain Encyclia cordigera from watering, but they should be very limited. In most places where it is grown, it requires sporadic fogging in the early morning, and once a few weeks light watering. Watering is most beneficial during bright, sunny weather. It is necessary to provide relatively strong sunlight or illumination to reflect the numerous solar conditions, cloudless days occurring in winter. Until spring, fertilization should be reduced or completely abandoned.
