Dendrobium hancockii, also called as Hancock's Dendrobium, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by Robert Allen Rolfe in 1903.
IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM HANCOCKII
Dendrobium hancockii is native to China. Near Mengtze (Mong-tse) in the Province of Yunnan, these orchids grow on rocks at heights of 1850-2150 m. They are also found near Kangting in the Sichuan Province, at an altitude of about 1600 m.
It is a medium sized, hot to cool growing epiphytic orchid, which reaching a height of 15-30 cm, with slender, occasionally branching, 15-30 cm long stems carrying linear, 2.2 to 2.8" (6 to 7 cm) long, unequally bidentate apically leaves.
Hancock's Dendrobium blooms in the spring and early summer on a short, axillary, 1 to 2 flowered, fragrant inflorescence that arises from the apical leaf axils of last years mature canes and occurring in the spring with strongly scented (honey) flowers. The yellow flowers are 2 cm long. The oval petals of both whorls are sharp. The 3-segment lip is short, wide, undulating and velvety, has rounded side plots, and the middle plot has a kidney shape.
DENDROBIUM HANCOCKII CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium hancockii needs a light level of 35000-40000 lux. Lightly filtered light is recommended.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the summer day is 23-24 ° C, the night 15-16 ° C, giving a daily difference of 8-9 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 14-21 ° C, the night 3-9 ° C, with a daily difference of 10-12 ° C.
Humidity:
In summer, Hancock's Dendrobium needs the average humidity of 75-80% and falls to almost 60% for a period of 2 months at the end of winter.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium hancockii can be grown on tree rootstocks or cork, but they need high humidity, and in the summer ensure watering at least once a day. They can also be grown in pots filled with loose, quickly drying substrate. Repotting is best done in early spring, when new roots grow.
Watering:
Precipitation is moderate to heavy for most of the year, but the winter is a bit drier. Dendrobium hancockii should be kept moist in late spring and summer, but when new growths reach maturity in autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to use a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. From spring to mid-summer, high-nitrogen fertilizer is preferred, but then until the end of autumn it is necessary to switch to high-phosphoric fertilizer.
Rest period:
In winter, it is necessary to reduce the amount of water and allow Dendrobium hancockii to dry between watering. However, they should not stay dry for too long. When the amount of water decreases, the fertilization should also be reduced or even eliminated.
